2021 Women’s Steeplechase World Rankings

Norah Tanui (aka Jeruto) became member No. 5 of the sub-9:00 club. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI)

THIS IS ONE EVENT where the Olympic champ didn’t factor in at the top end. Tokyo was the only race she won out of a half-dozen starts and in her three DL appearances she finished 7th, 7th & 8th. As a result, she couldn’t rate any higher than No. 6…

CONVERSELY, OUR NO. 1 didn’t even run in the Games. Norah Tanui is in the process of switching allegiance to Kazakhstan so wasn’t eligible to run. She instead had a season that consisted of 3 DL wins, including the Zürich final. Her list-leading 8:53.65 win at Pre rates as history’s No. 3 performance…

OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST Courtney Frerichs was also 2nd behind Tanui at Pre, her 8:57.77 breaking her own American Record, and moving her to No. 4 on the all-time world list… Emma Coburn saw her record streak of U.S. No. 1s terminated at 9.
