2021 Women’s 10,000 World Rankings

Sifan Hassan & Kalkida Gezahgene seemed equally satisfied with their Olympic 1 & 2 finishes. (ANDREW McCLANAHAN/PHOTO RUN)

5 DAYS AFTER SHE HAD WON the Olympic 5000 and just a day after she had added 1500 bronze, Sifan Hassan completed the long-distance track double with another gold. It was her second 10K of the year, the first having been a World Record 29:06.82 win in Hengelo in June. The two races combined to give her an obvious No. 1…

HASSAN’S MARK, HOWEVER, stood up as the WR for only 2 days as Letesenbet Gidey quickly dropped the all-time standard down to 29:01.03… Hassan then thrashed Gidey in Tokyo, but confusing things was Kalkidan Gezahegne, who gave Hassan the best run for her money, also beating Gidey. Gezahegne had an earlier race on her chart, but in the final analysis her 5-second margin over Gidey in the critical Olympic race was the decider…

EARLY-SEASON LEADER Gudaf Tsegay chose the 5000 route in Japan, but her May win over Gezahegne was enough to give her No. 4.
