THINGS WENT TOPSY-TURVY in the qualifying round. Favored defending champ Brooke Andersen — the yearly list leader at 263-0 (80.17) — looked somewhat listless in fouling twice, then reaching only 222-2 (67.72) to end up a non-advancing No. 25 on the day.

She had reportedly looked good in practice, but after her non-Q she posted, “Not everyone knew, but since the beginning/middle of June I’ve been dealing with a very painful shoulder issue; this caused training to not be as intense and more of a take-it-day-by-day case.”

Comebacking WR holder Anita Włodarczyk, a 4-time WC gold medalist, also had a bad day, reaching just 233-6 (71.17). All that earned her was the distinction of being the farthest non-Q ever.

Conversely, Hanna Skydan of Azerbaijan unleashed an NR 252-11 (77.10), the farthest Q-round mark ever.

Camryn Rogers, last year’s silver medalist, now donned the mantle of favorite and she had extra motivation following Canadian teammate Ethan Katzberg’s surprise win in the men’s event.

Drawn last in the order, Rogers opened with a solid 253-4 (77.22) that gave her a 10-foot lead over Skydan’s 243-4 (74.18). Neither would improve, but Rogers’ mark stayed in the lead, while Skydan would slip to 4th behind a pair of Americans.

Cal alum Rogers followed up with heaves of 252-10, 251-9, 248-3, 251-8 & 245-9 (77.07, 76.75, 75.68, 76.72, 74.92). Overall she had 4 marks good enough to win and 6 good enough to medal as the province of British Columbia claimed both hammer golds.

“Ethan really set the stage out there,” the 24-year-old Rogers said. “Being able to win this medal for Canada means the world to me.

“You never know what can happen on the day of the finals. Everything is possible and that is what makes championships so exciting. On the day you need to be ready to throw your best. This medal is a good step in the right direction. I am excited about what next year will bring. Paris will be huge.”

Meanwhile U.S. teammates Janee’ Kassanavoid and DeAnna Price waged a battle for the other two medals with 9 others. At the end of round 1 it was Rogers and Skydan, with Silja Kosonen of Finland in bronze position at 242-5 (73.89). Both Americans fouled.

In the second Kassanavoid led off by moving into silver position ahead of Skydan at 249-4 (76.00) but Price, the ’19 winner, fouled again.

The third stanza found Kassanavoid solidifying her hold on the runner-up spot at 250-6 (76.36). Price got onto the board with a 240-5 (73.28) that earned her 7th, and another 3 attempts.

The only excitement of the final 3 rounds came in stanza 5, when Price got her best of the day, a 247-5 (75.41) for bronze.

Said Kassanavoid, “It was a huge win for me; I could not have imagined a better meet than this. Last year, I ended up with the bronze medal. I knew I could have done more and I wanted more. So I ended this with a better performance, more consistent and a better medal.”

For her part, Price said, “This is unbelievable. This bronze feels like gold today. After the first two attempts I was relaxing myself, because it was really nerve-wracking. But I managed to fight back with that 75.41m throw.”
