DEFENDING CHAMPION Jasmine Moore was on a mission. After a disappointing 5th in the long jump, the Paris LJ/TJ double bronze medalist secured her spot immediately, was virtually unchallenged all afternoon, and finished her six exceptional hop-step-and-jumps with a season’s best.
There was no dilly-dallying for the defending champ, who assumed command after her 46-10¾ (14.29) opening salvo, more than 3ft farther than Ciynamon Stevenson’s 43-8¾ (13.33), Oklahoma’s Agur Dwol’s 43-8¾ (13.25) and Euphenie Andre’s 43-4¼ (13.21).
Moore did not ease up in round 2, bounding over 14m again with 46-2¾ (14.09). Stevenson did not improve, but Dwol and Mylana Hearn each did, stretching to 45-1¾ (13.76) and a windy 43-11¼ (13.39), knocking Stevenson into 4th.
In round 3, Gator alum Moore increased her stranglehold on 1st with 46-9½ (14.29). Dwol fouled, but movement for podium places continued, as Andre’s 44-9 PR (13.64) moved her into 3rd and Arianna Fisher leapt 44-1¼ (13.44) to land in 4th.
The final three rounds produced no changes in order, as Dwol, Andre (3 fouls) and Fisher did not improve. That left Moore to put an exclamation point on her dominance with a 48-2 (14.68) round 6 effort.
When asked about her foul-free outing a beaming Moore said, “It was my day. I’m so happy I was right.” She later added that to do well in the triple jump is “not a strength thing or a speed thing, it’s all timing.”
With the WC long jump podium no longer available this season, she admitted a burden may have been lifted from her shoulders. “There’s relief,” she said. “Having been overwhelmed this year doing both the long jump and the triple jump, focusing on the triple jump will be beneficial.
“I don’t really like to have all my eggs in one basket, so I think that part may stress me out a little bit. But I’ve never just trained one event, so who knows, and I’m excited for that.”
