New Balance Indoor Boys — 4 High School Records

Bullis soph Quincy Wilson broke the 400 HSR which had stood for 20 years and anchored an obliteration of the 4×4 standard. (KEVIN MORRIS)

ROXBURY CROSSING, MASSACHUSETTS, March 07-09 & Brighton, Massachusetts, March 10 — Quincy Wilson (Bullis, Potomac, Maryland) stole the show at a New Balance Nationals that produced four High School Records and plenty of top-shelf performances besides. The 16-year-old soph stormed a record-breaking 45.76 in the 400, covering the first half in 22.15 en route to cutting 0.16 off the HSR that had been held by Elzie Coleman (Free, Newburgh, New York) for 20 years.

“I just wanted to come out here and show the crowd, all my fans, that I could do it,” said Wilson. “I’ve been dreaming about this. It means a lot to me.”

At the end of the same day, Wilson came back to anchor another HSR (and WJR) from the Bullis 4×4. Following Alexander Lambert (48.50), Julian Roberson (47.98) and Colin Abrams (48.52), Wilson unleashed a 46.87 closer that finished off a 3:11.87. That sliced 0.66 off the old best of 3:12.53 that had been set by Bullis in ’19.

Records fell in the longest races too. On Friday, the day after running a 4:05 leg on the American Fork (Utah) 4 x Mile team that clocked the No. 2 time ever at 16:43.21, Daniel Simmons cruised 25 laps of the track and stayed well ahead of the pacing lights, crushing the HSR by nearly 18 seconds. After passing 1600 in 4:26.93 and 3200 in 8:50.16, he finished in 13:38.86. The old record of 13:56.82 had been set last year by Tyrone Gorze (Crater, Central Point, Oregon).

Along the way, Simmons lapped the field, with Paul Bergeron (Academy, Westford, Massachusetts) finishing 2nd in 14:14.57 to move to No. 7 all-time.

Simmons, bound for BYU, admitted, “I don’t think I ever smiled so much after a race.”

On Saturday Drew Griffith (Butler, Pennsylvania) tore through 2M in a HSR 8:34.91 to take down the 8:39.15 mark that Edward Cheserek set in ’23 for St. Benedict’s (Newark, New Jersey). The Notre Dame recruit covered the first mile in 4:18.7 before closing in 4:16.2. That was enough to win by more than 16 seconds over the 8:51.17 of Grant Morgenfeld (Palo Alto, California).

Those weren’t the only distance headlines. Patrick Hilby (Central Catholic, Aurora, Illinois) pulled away over the final lap of the 800 to win in 1:48.47 over Collins Abrams of Bullis (1:49.71). In the mile, Clay Shively (Trinity, Wichita, Kansas) followed a rabbit for the first half before moving to No. 8 all-time with his 4:00.47.

On the speed side, soph Jake Odey-Jordon won a very competitive 200 in 20.66 to move to No. 4 ever. Behind him, Jaden Wiley (Duluth, Georgia) ran 20.71 to move to =No. 6 and Caine Stanley (IMG, Bradenton, Florida) hit 20.79 for No. 9. In the hurdles, Bradley Franklin (Thompson, Alabaster, Alabama) moved to =No. 8 with his 7.61.

In contrast, the field events seemed rather calm, though pole vaulter Dyson Wicker (Rockwall-Heath, Rockwall, Texas) cleared 17-8½ to move to No. 10 on the ATL.
