NCAA Women’s XC — Valby Supreme, Wolfpack 3-Peats

After her attempted runaway in ’22 came up short, Parker Valby doubled-down on her retry, churned to a lead of 20.5 seconds at 4K and held most of that for the largest victory margin since ’07. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

EARLYSVILLE, VIRGINIA, November 18 — The atmosphere of the NCAA Women’s XC Championships took on the aura of a heavyweight fight. Defending individual champion Katelyn Tuohy of NC State came in looking to turn the tables on Florida junior Parker Valby who had run to dominant victories in her three outings this season including a convincing 12-second victory over Tuohy at the Nuttycombe Invitational.

Junior Tuohy and her Wolfpack mates also looked to retain the team crown coach Laurie Henes had carried back to Raleigh the past two years — this time without the contribution of a crucial low-stick harrier.

Kelsey Chmiel was sidelined (see feature). In ’21 the now-senior had placed 6th in leading the Pack to an 84–121 team win from BYU. Last year she placed 3rd behind Tuohy’s individual win in NC State’s 114–140 victory over New Mexico.

In the meantime coach Michael Smith’s Northern Arizona team — 6th last year — had forged into favorite’s position in USTFCCCA polls on the strength of impressive wins at the Virginia and Nuttycombe Invitationals. The Nutty race saw the Lumberjacks head NC State 52–95. Part of Henes’ team’s fighting chance lay with senior transfer Amaaris Tyynismaa, 9th for Alabama in ’22 but a DNF in this year’s ACC and Regional races.

The scene was set on a perfect backdrop on the Panorama course with a sellout crowd (5000 tickets sold) looking on.

Valby was expected to take the lead from the gun, but in the first few minutes of the race, she ran into trouble.

“For a good 3 or 4 minutes I was boxed in,” said Valby afterwards. She got out of the ruck soon enough, though, and was in the lead by the first kilo and into attack mode, soon gapping the field: “Once I got out [of the box] I was like, ‘You know what? No looking back now.’”

Barreling down the long downhill and cresting the following steep uphill with her trademark head tilt and driving arms, Valby went from an 0.6-sec lead to 8.8 over the next kilo. The hills and the field were no match for the famously-low-mileage redshirt junior as her work on a crosstraining exercise machine had made the hills on the course feel “easy.”

“The Arc Trainer,” said Valby when asked about her proficiency up the hills. “You put the resistance up and the incline up, it can mimic hills. Honestly, it’s harder than the hills to me. It’s like when sprinters train with weight vests on. You are training against resistance. When you actually go up the hills it’s so much easier because there is no weight.”

Behind her, Tuohy led the chase pack. However, she was not herself we would later learn, as in the team battle her squad sat 6th at the K with the order BYU 108, Northern Arizona 119, Notre Dame 135, Stanford 208 and NC State 220.

“She’s sick,” said Henes of her star, who was sent to the medical tent following the race. “She’s been sick the last day and a half here. She probably wouldn’t want me to say that because she wouldn’t want to make any excuses. I was afraid she wouldn’t get through the race today.”

Tuohy did her best to stay with the lead pack, but 8 others were right with her as they began to jostle for positioning as they weaved and wound their way through the challenging course. NC State team prospects were on the rise, however. The order at 2K (BYU 121, Northern Arizona 131, Notre Dame 161) saw the defending champs up to 4th with 170.

By 3K (halfway) NC State led Northern Arizona 117–122 with BYU at 140. Though Tuohy in 4th (9:33.3) led Lumberjack leader Elise Stearns by 6 places their time differential was just 1.8 seconds. Valby now had an 18.3-second margin over her chasers.

South Regional 2nd- and 3rd-placers, Alabama frosh Doris Lemngole and soph teammate Hilda Olemomoi emerged from the group by 4K bringing Notre Dame senior Olivia Markezich and Oklahoma State soph Billah Jepkirui with them.

Though the lead had grown to 20 seconds for Valby and she looked to be in command, she later revealed she had lacked the self-assurance she felt last year when she had led Tuohy early only to be caught in the end.

“Going into this race I lacked confidence,” Valby said afterwards. “I didn’t trust myself, but coach just kept reassuring me that I was fit and I could do it.”

She was also motivated by what she read on the web before the race: “Everyone online was saying, ‘She’s going to do so bad on this course, that the course doesn’t favor her, that this course is uneven,’ and so honestly I took that as motivation to prove people wrong.”

That motivation was more than enough as Valby sped to a winning time of 18:55.2 to crush the fastest 6K in meet history (by New Mexico’s Ednah Kurgat in ’17 at Louisville) by 24.3.

While comparing harrier times across widely varying courses and conditions is of dubious value, a stat Valby could take to the bank was that she had become the first Florida Gator to win an NCAA cross title.

Her victory margin, 10.5 secs, was the largest since ’07 when Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego finished 16.9 up on Colorado’s Jenny Simpson (Barringer at the time).

Lemngole finished next (3:03.0 last kilo) and outdistanced Markezich 19:05.7–19:10.0. Tuohy regrouped over the last 2K to go from 11th to 5th clocked in 19:23.0.

The final kilometer delivered a nailbiter for coaches Henes and Smith. At 5K the Wolfpack led the Lumberjacks 116-124 (with Oklahoma State also vacuuming down its tally to 177). Through 3 scorers, however, Northern Arizona had a 3-point edge from transfer-from-New Mexico Gracelynn Larkin, Stearns and Annika Reiss packed together in adjusted spots 13–15.

In the crescendo of the last kilo, Lumberjacks Larkin and Reiss each picked up 5 adjusted spots, Stearns lost 1 and transfer-from-San Francisco Ruby Smee gained 10 valuable positions.

At the end with 3 runners from each contender in, NC State led its challenger 75–80. From 5K–6K Tuohy had picked up a place and Tyynismaa (25th unadjusted) 3 spots. Senior Samantha Bush (28th) contributed a 14-point swing. The Wolfpack’s fourth runner, frosh Leah Stephens (43rd), had slipped back 13 scoring places after a fine NCAA debut run through 5K yet kept her team ahead.

When Lumberjack Aliandrea Upshaw (57th) raced in 4 scoring spots ahead of NC State frosh Grace Hartman, the tallies sealed the Wolfpack 3-peat by a single point, 123–124. The equal-smallest victory margin in meet history looked on the scoresheet very much like Oregon’s 125–126 win from Michigan in ’16.

For Valby the race was nothing more than her having a good day. Though fan-held signs along the course messaged support for her — including one that read ”Vengeance for Valby,” she was reflective about her reversal of fortune.

“I’m so proud of myself that I gave it my all that day and it didn’t work out,” she said of last year‘s race. “I gave it my all today and it just worked out.”
