Elected: USTFCCCA’s 2023 Hall Of Fame Class
The collegiate coaches association has inducted 14 new athletes to its HOF (see “Last Lap”).
Appointed: Márton Gyulai, 43
As WA’s Director of Competition & Events. A sprinter while at Notre Dame, he went on to twice make Hungary’s Olympic bob sled team (’02 & ’06). Most recently he served as Executive Director Of Sport for the World Championships in Budapest.
Died: Ruth Fuchs, 76
On September 20, in Jena, Germany. The 2-time Olympic champion in the javelin representing East Germany, she set 6 WRs in the course of her career and World Ranked 12 times, including 8 straight No. 1s 1972–79. She was T&FN’s Athlete Of The Decade for the ’70s.
Died: Peter Matthews, 78
On September 09, in England; after heart problems. One of our sport’s all-around top authorities, he was a preeminent statistician, stadium announcer, TV commentator and historian. A child prodigy, he had his first statistical work published in T&FN in the ’50s while still a teenager. He was the longtime editor of the ATFS Annual.
Died: Bob Seaman, 88
On September 11, in Wilmington, California; of Parkinson’s Disease. The 3rd placer in the ’55 NCAA mile for UCLA, he finished 4th in the 1500 the following year. With his 3:58.07 for the mile in 1962, he was the eighth American to break the 4:00-barrier. He was Ranked No. 8 in the U.S. in ’63.
Died: Mabel Walker, 94
On September 10, in Forsyth, Georgia. The last surviving women’s member of the ’48 Olympic team, Walker was the Trials 100 champ that year. She didn’t advance from the Olympic 100 heats.
