Died: Anna Ambraziené, 69
On February 12, in Vilnius, Lithuania. Competing for the Soviet Union, she set a WR of 54.02 in the 400H in ’83 and later that season won WC silver. She World Ranked No. 1 that year, one of her 6 appearances.
Died: Kent Bernard, 82
On February 19, in St. James, Trinidad. In ’64, he placed 3rd in the NCAA 400 for Michigan. A bronze medalist in the 4×4 for Trinidad at the ’64 Olympics, he also won relay medals in the Commonwealth and Pan-Am Games. He coached at Michigan until ’99.
Died: Yvonne Curtet-Chabot, 104
On February 21, of complications from Alzheimer’s. The 8th-placer in the ’48 Olympic long jump for France, prior to her death she was the oldest living Olympian in any sport.
Died: Jan Johnson, 74
On February 23, in Atascadero, California. An NCAA vault champion for Kansas in ’70, he also won the NCAA Indoor for Alabama in ’72, taking 2nd in the outdoor meet that year. He won the ’71 AAU title and was 3rd at the ’72 Olympic Trials. At Munich, he won the bronze medal. A 2-time World Ranker, he was No. 4 in ’71, No. 5 in ’72.
Died: Mabel Landry, 92
On February 20, of cancer. The Chicago native was the 7th-placer in the ’52 Olympic long jump. At the ’55 Pan-Am Games, she won bronze in the 60 and gold on the 4×1.
Died: Felicia Moldovan, 57
On March 03, in Spain. Four-time Olympian in the javelin who won silver in the ’95 World Champs. The 6-time World Ranker was No. 3 in ’95.
Died: James Munyala, 72
On February 17. A 3-time NCAA steeplechase champion for UTEP, he also ran on two winning NCAA distance medleys indoors. He World Ranked twice, with a No. 5 in ’77.
Died: Klaus Richtzenhain, 90
On March 06, in Thüringen, Germany. An East German competing for the united German team at the ’56 Olympics, he won the silver medal in the 1500 behind Ron Delaney. He Ranked No. 5 in the world that year.
Died: Olavi Salonen, 91
On March 06, in Finland. In 1957, finished 2nd in a Finnish 1500 race in which both he and winner Olavi Salsola set a WR of 3:40.2, while Olavi Vuorisalo also dipped under the old record in 3rd. The record lasted just one day. Salonen, a 2-time Olympian, had been the last living of the “Three Olavis.”
