HS Girls Athlete Of The Year — Briana Williams

A national record 10.94 in the 100 helped propel Briana Williams to the AOY title. (JIRO MOCHIZUKI/IMAGE OF SPORT)

IT TOOK US A WHILE to get there, but now we can announce our choice as the top HS girl of ’19. The September edition carried all the year’s-end wrapup material save that bit of voting, while we waited for pending adjudication of a positive test for potential 100m recordsetter Briana Williams. With the news that she was cleared of any wrongdoing in the case, we were able to conduct our annual voting, and she ended up as the convincing overall No. 1. She received 14 of 19 votes for the top spots— the other votes for No. 1 went to Anna Hall (4) and Jasmine Moore (1)—although it must be noted that she was downgraded on more than one ballot, not only because of the doping shadow, but also because she didn’t run for her school (which isn’t a disqualifying factor per T&FN’s longstanding protocol). Some voters downgraded No. 4 choice Athing Mu for the same lack-of-representation reason.

This year’s 14 vote-getters, with their All-America events (* = junior; ** = soph; *** = frosh):

1. *Briana Williams (Northeast, Oakland Park, Florida) 100, 200 172
2. Anna Hall (Valor, Highlands Ranch, Colorado) high jump, heptathlon 153
