ACC Men — Parker Wolfe Wins Two

Just 3rd in the 1500 last year, this time Carolina’s Wolfe won a 10K/5K double, PRing in the shorter race. (UNC ATHLETICS)

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, May 09-11 — Parker Wolfe pulled off an impressive distance double at the ACC Championships, but it wasn’t enough to hold back Virginia overall as the Cavaliers scored 107 points for a narrow win over Virginia Tech (102⅓) and North Carolina (102).

In Thursday’s 10,000, Wolfe and teammate Alex Phillip shared much of the pacing with Virginia’s Will Anthony before Wolfe took off for the final 4 laps to score the win in 29:15.12. It was his first-ever 25-lapper. In the 5000 on Saturday, Wolfe didn’t hesitate to lead from the start, though he basically was pacing his teammates. Then he showed his stuff in the final 1600, closing with a swift 4:03.61. His PR 13:19.38 topped Phillip (13:34.11) and sliced 4 seconds off the meet record that Dylan Jacobs of Notre Dame had set in ’22.

“A lot of it was team running. We had 8 guys in this race. We were just trying to get as many points for the team title as possible,” explained Wolfe. “Went in, we were going to make it hard, make ‘em hurt. If they wanted to beat us, they had to do it the hard way.”

That 5000 was worth 22 points alone for the Tar Heels, but it wasn’t ultimately enough. Virginia, which had tied Florida State for the title in ’09 but had never won it outright, wasn’t sure of a victory until after the 4×4. Nathan Mountain, with his 8:30.05 win in the steeple, was the Cavalier’s sole winner, with teammate Yasin Sado 2nd in 8:30.78. More key points came from the 1500, where North Carolina’s Ethan Strand won in 3:40.43 but 2-3 went to Virginia’s Gary Martin (3:40.87) and Wes Porter (3:42.13).

Virginia Tech’s points were helped along in a big way by Judson Lincoln. The soph more than made up for last year, when he was disqualified after his 400 win for “misconduct.” This time around he won the 400 in a PR and collegiate leader 44.60, then took the 200 in a PR 20.51. Finally, his 44.23 anchor in the 4×4 brought his team from 4th to the win in 3:03.35. For that he earned meet MVP honors.

Florida State got a horizontal jumps double from senior Jeremiah Davis, with his 26-1¾ (7.97) on Friday before Saturday’s 54-10 (16.71). Duke’s Simen Guttormsen won the vault at 18-6½ (5.65) before three misses at 18-10¼ (5.75). Miami’s Milton Ingraham won the discus at 201-2 (61.32).
