Terrier Classic — Young Takes 5K CR Sub-13

Having committed to “racing more freely,” CR-setter Nico Young attacked from 800 out and nearly held off race winner Adrian Wildschutt (640). (KEVIN MORRIS)

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, January 26-27 — Nico Young might not have won the 5000 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, but he dominated the headlines. In placing 2nd, the Northern Arizona junior became the first collegian to bust the 13-minute barrier, indoors or out, with his 12:57.14, taking more than 6 seconds from the Collegiate Record that Harvard’s Graham Blanks had set on the same track 8 weeks earlier.

With rabbits Brian Barraza and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot at the front, Young stayed well back in the early going, only 13th when he passed the 1K (2:39.57) and 11th at 2K (5:16.66). Barraza hit 3K in 7:51.42 and stepped off, leaving Sam Atkin and John Heymans at the front. Young (7:52.75) sat in 5th, behind Florida State alum Adrian Wildschutt and ’22’s NCAA 5000 runner-up Morgan Beadlescomb. With a kilo to go, Young (10:27.64) sat in 4th.

Wildschutt struck with 4 to go, and he, Atkin and Young started to pull away from the others. Young surged past a lap later, sprinting hard over the final laps only to be caught by Wildschutt in the final strides. The South African finished off his national record 12:56.76 with a 27.20, compared to Young’s 27.76.

Young later posted, “I am incredibly proud of the risks I took in this race and the commitment I’ve made to racing more freely. I’m excited to enjoy every moment.”

In addition to the CR, he moved to No. 4 among Americans, a list that got a number of revisions. Behind 3rd-placer Atkin (12:58.73), Abdihamid Nur (13:03.17) moved to No. 8 and Beadlescomb (6th in 13:03.57) moved to No. 9.

There actually were two evenly-balanced fast sections of the event and the recordbreaking came in the second. In the first, Edwin Kurgat took the win in 12:57.52, Britain’s George Mills 2nd in 12:58.68, and Yared Nuguse hit 13:02.09 to become No. 7 American all-time. The mile AR-holder took more than 38 seconds off his best, set outdoors in ’21.

The 25-lappers concluded the men’s-only first day of the meet. Earlier, Young’s Lumberjack teammate (and prep teammate before that) Colin Sahlman used a 55.89 final 400 to win the mile in 3:53.17, becoming the No. 10 all-time collegian. That topped Philibert-Thiboutot (3:53.41) and Craig Engels (3:54.03).

Britain’s Jack Rowe won the 3000 in 7:38.35 ahead of Kenyan Amon Kemboi (7:38.99). In 3rd, South Carolina’s Anass Essayi ran 7:39.11 for No. 8 on the college ATL.

The next day the women dominated the schedule, and the most notable race was again the 5000, paced by Alicia Monson for 3400m. Ethiopians scored the sweep as Senayet Getachew (14:42.94 World Junior Record) moved to No. 9 in world history, Fantaye Belyneh (14:43.25) No. 10 and Aynadis Mebratu (14:44.94) finished in 3rd. Spain’s Marta García (14:46.37) led Josette Norris across the line. Norris scored a 14:46.51 to make No. 2 among Americans all-time. Courtney Wayment crossed next with her 14:49.78 to become No. 6.

BYU alum Anna Camp-Bennett won the mile in 4:27.13 ahead of Providence’s Kimberley May (4:27.85). Elle Donaghu ran away with the 3000 in 8:46.39. Canada’s Lucia Stafford impressed by winning the 800 in 2:01.79 and, 3 hours later, the 1000 in 2:39.62.
