IT’S VERY EARLY IN THE YEAR to be going out on a limb to attempt to forecast what’s going to happen in Tokyo this summer, but here we are with our first men’s medal picks of the year.
At this point, our crystal ball is projecting a healthy medal haul for the U.S.: 17 medals total, with 8 golds, 6 silvers and 3 bronzes. That’s very comparable to how things were distributed in Rio, where Team USA had 16 total medals, with 7 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronzes.
Only 3 of the Rio winners are currently charted to repeat atop the podium: Eliud Kipchoge in the marathon, the U.S 4×4 and Ryan Crouser in the shot.
