“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.”
The above portion of an IOC statement released today seals the deal. The Games will be postponed by approximately a year, exact dates to be determined, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In short order, TrackTown USA, the group scheduled to host the United States Olympic Trials, announced the qualifying meet for Tokyo will, naturally, be postponed as well: “TrackTown USA is now working with our partners at USA Track & Field and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee on rescheduling the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field. Our Local Organizing Committee stands ready to welcome the best athletes in the country to the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field once a decision is reached.”
