Northeast: Providence & Chloe Thomas (Connecticut)

Hopkinton, New Hampshire — Sunny skies and temps in the low 50s (10C) at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds brought out the best in coach Ray Treacy’s No. 11 Providence squad. The Friars put together a 3-4-5 finish which helped in bringing the winning score down to 51. No. 28 Syracuse got the second automatic qualifying spot, its 105 beating the 131 from No. 25 Boston College. Harvard ran 4th (144) and UConn 5th (151).

Connecticut senior Chloe Thomas only finished 7th last year. This year is another story. The Big East champ led the entire way, taking the victory in 19:23.1. after running each 2K loop faster than the last. Columbia’s Phoebe Anderson was 2nd in 19:31.5. Then came the Providence juggernaut: Kimberly May (3rd in 19:34.4), with Alex Millard 4th in the same time. Shannon Flockhart finished 5th at 19:36.3.

Mid-Atlantic: West Virginia & Ceili McCabe (West Virginia)

University Park, Pennsylvania – No. 5 West Virginia scored a dominating win on a cool (mid 40s/7C), foggy day in moving up from its 4th-place finish last year. With 5 runners in the top 13, the Mountaineers tallied a mere 41 points to hand defending champion (and No. 8-ranked) Georgetown (58) a 17-point defeat.

Ceili McCabe and frosh teammate Joy Naukot led early, but by halfway McCabe, the Big 12 champion who redshirted last track season to focus on the Olympics, started to pull away to defend her title. At the finish the Canadian sported an impressive 14-second lead over Georgetown’s Chloe Scrimgeour, 19:11.2–19:25.5. Third went to Villanova’s Sadie Sigfstead (19:30.8), ahead of Penn State’s Florence Caron (19:41.7) and Georgetown’s Lucy Jenks (19:45.4), as Naukot held on for 6th in 19:49.4.

No. 20 Penn State snared the 3rd-place spot at 85 points, with Princeton (99) and Villanova (108) following.

Southeast: NC State & Grace Hartman

Rock Hill, South Carolina — NC State upset the formchart in locking up a chance to defend its national title. The No. 17 Wolfpack tallied 60 points to win an eighth-straight regional crown in topping No. 15 Virginia (85) as well as the favorite, No. 13 North Carolina (119). Conditions were mild, temps in the high 50s (15C) and sunny after the morning fog burned off. Wake Forest took 4th (126) and Liberty 5th (162).

Wolfpack teammates Grace Hartman and Hannah Gapes shared the early lead. Clemson frosh Silvia Jelego moved into a close 2nd when Hartman passed 5K in 16:47.7. The battle raged until the finish, when Hartman came across inches ahead of Jelego, 20:04.2–20:04.4. That gave the soph, already an All-America on the track over 10K, the Regional title to go along with her ACC crown. Gapes landed 3rd in 20:08.3, with Clemson’s Judy Kosgei (20:21.6) and Virginia’s Margot Appleton (20:32.1) next.

South: Alabama & Hilda Olemomoi (Florida)

Tallahassee, Florida — Last year, Alabama teammates Doris Lemngole and Hilda Olemomoi ran 2-3 behind Florida’s Parker Valby. Now Olemomoi runs for Florida, and though Lemngole handily beat her at the SEC Championships, here she put together a kick that was barely enough to edge her former teammate on the line. The two ran neck-in-neck for much of the course in sunny, mild (69F/20C) conditions, Olemomoi passing 5K in 16:26.9 with Lemngole a tenth back. On the final stretch, Olemomoi led with a fast-closing Lemngole passing her inches too late, both timed in 19:26.9.

Alabama’s Brenda Tuwei finished 3rd in 16:31.4. Florida State’s Agnes McTighe (16:41.3) and Bieke Schipperen (16:41.4) came next, ahead of Alabama’s Pheline Cheruto (16:48.0). The Crimson Tide, ranked No. 7 nationally, finished with 50 points. No. 18 Florida came in 2nd with 86. In 3rd, No. 24 Florida State surprised No. 16 Tennessee, 96–125, with Lipscomb 5th at 136.

Great Lakes: Notre Dame & Mercy Kinyanjui (Toledo)

Norton, Ohio— That Notre Dame intended to go out quite aggressively was apparent at the 2K mark, where the defending champions had 4 in the top 5 and were showing just 20 points on the leader board on a day with cloudy skies and temps in the high 40s (9C). Senior Siona Chisholm led at that point, though by the end of the next loop she had company in Toledo’s Mercy Kinyanjui, both passing 5K in 16:32.7.

The Kenyan proved the strongest over the final loop, taking the victory in 19:29.7. Michigan State’s Canadian frosh Rachel Forsyth finished hard in 2nd at 19:31.7. Chisholm was 3rd in 19:35.1, ahead of Central Michigan’s Emily Paupore (19:36.9) and Notre Dame’s Erin Strzelecki (19:37.8).

At the finish, No. 6 Notre Dame still had 3 in the top 10. That and a 14th and 20th gave the Irish 51 points, more than enough to stay ahead of No. 14 Wisconsin (97), unranked Toledo (100) and No. 29 Michigan State (111).

Midwest: Oklahoma State & Leah Jeruto (Oklahoma)

Peoria, Illinois — Leah Jeruto of Oklahoma, only 9th in the SEC, made a much bigger splash at the Regional, sprinting to victory with a dominating finish. On a sunny day with temps in the mid-50s (12C) at the Newman Golf Course, Jeruto had battled for the lead with Minnesota’s Ali Weimer, who had led at 5K in 16:37.8. However, when it came time to kick, Jeruto outdistanced the Gopher, 19:42.9–19:48.9.

Maelle Porcher of Iowa State ran 3rd in 19:52.8, followed by Oklahoma State’s Josphine Mwaura (19:53.7) and Nebraska’s Ali Bainbridge (19:53.9).

In the team race, No. 23 Minnesota led early and was 150 points ahead of No. 19 Oklahoma State at 2K. The Cowboys kept coming, taking the lead by 5K and winning, 61–76. Northwestern (103), Iowa State (139) and Nebraska (181) grabbed the next three spots.

South Central: Arkansas & Paityn Noe (Arkansas)

College Station, Texas — “I knew what I needed to do,” said Arkansas’s Paityn Noe. The Razorback soph, as it turned out, had just one job: to win. Anything less and the Hogs would not have defeated Texas and saved their winning streak at the meet, now at 13 years straight. With the Longhorns ahead if a tie needed to be broken using NCAA rules, the No. 26 Razorbacks, with no wiggle room, pulled out an 80–81 victory.

Noe took it out from the start and worked on building an ever-growing lead over her top rival, Tulane frosh Caroline Jeptanui. By 5K (15:49.0) she had more than 19 seconds. She hit the finish in 18:55.8 for the 6K course, more than 27 seconds ahead of Jeptanui’s 19:22.9. In 3rd came another Tulane frosh, Blezzin Kimutai, in 19:24.7. She was followed by Baylor’s frosh (also a Kenyan), Ruth Kimeli in 19:28.1. The lead Texas runner, Olivia Howell, crossed 5th in 19:29.9.

Mountain: BYU & Pamela Kosgei (New Mexico)

Reno, Nevada — The battle between No. 1 BYU and No. 4 Northern Arizona came down to front-end strength and, at least this time, BYU prevailed in a big way. The Cougars put 4 into the top 10, double the number that Northern Arizona did. That added up to 52 points, compared to the Lumberjacks’ 65. New Mexico, with 111, finished 3rd. Utah, with 122, was 4th.

Individually, the story was New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei. The Kenyan frosh, undefeated this season, sat behind Texas Tech’s Juliet Cherubet for the first 5K or so before blasting to a 13-second win on the sloppy, snow-covered course (temps in the low 30s/1C). Kosgei clocked 19:30.9, while Cherubet, the soph runner-up in the Big 12, ran 19:44.6. Northern Colorado senior Regina Mpigachai, a Tanzanian, took 3rd in 19:54.4. Elise Stearns led Northern Arizona with her 4th in 19:55.4, just ahead of BYU’s leader, Riley Chamberlain (19:56.4).

West: Oregon & Amy Bunnage (Stanford)

Colfax, Washington — No. 2-ranked Oregon ran 1-2 in capturing its 12th team title, its 43 points eclipsing the 67 tallied in a surprising finish by No. 12 Stanford. No. 3 Washington had to settle for 3rd at 101, ahead of No. 21 Gonzaga (134) and Portland (156).

Individually, the race featured a fairly crowded lead pack until Stanford’s Amy Bunnage and Oregon’s Şilan Ayyıldız and Maddy Elmore started pulling away after 4K. At 5K, the Australian soph had a couple of strides on the Ducks and she fought to keep it that way at the finish, winning in 19:17.1 on a damp, chilly day (33F/0C). This was Bunnage’s first race since the NCAA track finals five months ago.

Big 10 champ Ayyıldız and Elmore, both seniors, finished in 19:19.3 and 19:23.7 respectively. Fourth went to Gonzaga’s Rosin Machu (19:34.5) with Judy Chepkoech of Arizona State 5th (19:36.6).
