Northeast: Providence & Maia Ramsden (Harvard)

Bronx, New York—Historic Van Cortlandt Park hosted the Northeast in light rain with temperatures in the mid-60s (18C). The Friars, runners-up at the Big East, put 3 in the top 15 and scored 71 points. Syracuse managed 91, and Columbia put 3 in the top 7 to come close at 99. Harvard finished 4th with 121, ahead of Northeastern (180).

Harvard’s Maia Ramsden, a New Zealander, took the individual win in 20:20.6, kicking her way out of the pack of 6 that had been together at 5K (16:25). Mid-Atlantic: Georgetown & Ceili McCabe (West Virginia)

State College, Pennsylvania — With 1200 to go on a soaked (courtesy of Tropical Storm Nicole) Penn State course, the top 5 bunched within 0.6 seconds. But only one of them could produce brutal finishing speed.

West Virginia junior Ceili McCabe waited until the end to make her decisive move. The Big 12 champ poured it on at the finish to win in 19:58.3, outlegging Georgetown’s Maggie Donahue (20:03.3).

The rest of the field fell farther back, with Princeton’s Abigail Loveys 3rd in 20:11.6, ahead of Penn frosh Maeve Stiles (20:15.3). Georgetown had two more low sticks in Grace Jensen (5th, 20:18.4) and Chloe Scrimgeour (6th, 20:23.9).

The heavy rain and temperatures of 55° (12C) did not daunt the No. 13 Hoya squad, the Big East champions, who came away with 37 points and a solid win over West Virginia (75) Penn (106), Princeton (114) and Penn State (143).

Southeast: NC State & Katelyn Tuohy (NC State)

Louisville, Kentucky — In case anybody had any doubts about No. 1 NC State after it won the ACC title by a mere 4 points, the Wolfpack crushed all comers at Louisville’s Tom Sawyer Park, sweeping the top 3 places en route to an impressive score of 25 points.

On a damp, misty morning, the leaders of the Wolfpack were in no hurry to get to the front, running in 2-3-6 with 2K to go as Furman’s Bethany Graham led. But on the course’s final loop, they let loose, with Katelyn Tuohy zipping to the win in 19:49.1, more than 9 seconds ahead of teammate Kelsey Chmiel (19:58.6). Samantha Bush finished 3rd in 20:08.0.

Behind them came Kentucky’s Tori Herman in 20:10.9, Graham (20:11.1) and Duke’s Amina Maatoug (20:11.5).

Great Lakes: Notre Dame & Olivia Markezich (Notre Dame)

Terre Haute, Indiana — The No. 5 Notre Dame women pulled off a successful title defense on the popular Laverne Gibson course, but the shocker came from runner-up Ohio State. Ranked No. 25 coming in, the Buckeyes leapfrogged over Toledo (17), Michigan State (19), Michigan (21) and Wisconsin (22).

Notre Dame racked up just 34 points, thanks to a 1-4-6-11-12 finish. Ohio State moved from 6th with 2K to go to score 111 and edge Michigan (116), with the next 3 teams within 7 points of each other: Michigan State (124), Wisconsin (129) and Toledo (131).

Under overcast skies, with the temps around 45° (7C), the Notre Dame crew put their mark on the race early, holding the first 5 places after the first 2K loop, led by Olivia Markezich. She held on for the win, but was challenged by Big 10 champ Addie Engel of Ohio State, 19:54.1–19:57.8. Midwest: Oklahoma State & Olivia Howell (Illinois)

Columbia, Missouri — With Oklahoma State sitting at No. 3 in the national rankings, the battle at Missouri’s Gans Creek course turned out to be for the runner-up spot.

The Cowgirls, feeling very confident, chose to run the race from behind, and at halfway were only in 5th place with 136 points. Up front, it was No. 30 Northwestern and Bradley battling, just 6 points apart (82–88).

A kilometer later, Northwestern still led at 80, but the Cowgirls had moved up to 2nd with 99, and Bradley was relegated to 3rd at 109. By 5K, Oklahoma State had taken over, Natalie Cook and Taylor Roe running alongside Bradley’s Nicola Jansen (16:56.3). The score: Oklahoma State 62, Northwestern 87, Bradley 105.

Bradley made a strong push over the final K, dropping its score to 99, but Northwestern held on with 88 points to grab the qualifier, as the favorites took their win at 58 points.

Individually, the story was Olivia Howell of Illinois (20:02.9), who kicked well enough to win by 9 seconds over Cook and Roe (both 20:11.9). Tulsa’s Chloe Hershenow finished 4th (20:12.4).

South Central: Arkansas & Isabel Van Camp (Arkansas)

College Station, Texas — Running on Texas A&M’s Dale Watts course, the Arkansas team came hoping to notch an 11th-straight win in the final Regional for retiring coach Lance Harter. With thunderstorms threatening on the horizon, the Razorbacks did just that, with three frosh in their scoring 5.

No. 23-ranked Arkansas scored 49. The Texas Longhorns overtook host Texas A&M in the final loop to grab the second team qualifying spot with 102 points. LSU closed well for 3rd (154), just ahead of A&M (156).

Harter had said before the meet, “We’ll go in as a prohibitive favorite, but that doesn’t mean we can just go in cruise control.”

Arkansas junior Isabel Van Camp took the early lead and shook off her pursuers before halfway, finishing in 20:01.9 to handily defeat her former high school rival, Grace Morris of TCU (20:17.1). LSU’s Sophie Daigle took 3rd in 20:22.2 while Razorback frosh Mia Cochran was 4th (20:27.4).

Mountain: New Mexico & Everlyn Kemboi (Utah Valley)

Albuquerque, New Mexico — “It’s an incredibly deep group, and you’re probably going to see the Mountain teams finish very high at nationals,” predicted Joe Franklin, coach of host New Mexico beforehand.

Yes and yes, as 5 top 10-rated squads vying for Nationals berths ensured heated racing would ensue, and it did. Franklin’s No. 2-rated Lobos, Regional winner a year ago and 3rd at the NCAA, held a comfortable lead at each of four checkpoints and in the end prevailed with 56 points over Utah and Northern Arizona (both 103).

Kyle Kepler’s Utes moved up steadily through the field from 9th at 1.6K through 4th with a kilo to run to 2nd. Colorado State (121) secured 4th over ’21 Nationals 4th-place Colorado (121) and last year’s runner-up squad, BYU.

New leaders stepped up individually. Utah Valley senior Everlyn Kemboi — 13th at the ’21 Regional — motored away from about 3K onward to finish 11.9 seconds ahead of Northern Arizona junior Elise Stearns, who placed only 196th at Nationals last fall.

The victorious Lobos were led by ’21 NCAA 21st-placer Gracelyn Larkin in 5th.

West: Stanford & Kaylee Mitchell (Oregon State)

University Place, Washington — Twelfth and 16th at last year’s Regional, Oregon State junior Kaylee Mitchell and Portland soph Laura Pellicoro raced to 1st and 2nd individually as Stanford (poll rated No. 11 nationally coming in) headed 10th-rated Oregon 76–96.

The Cardinal squad got out quick to a wide margin with 5 in the first 10 at the kilo, where Oregon held 5th in the en route scoring. By 3K the Ducks moved into position to score the second automatic berth and held on to it over the second half.

Mitchell, 77th at the NCAA last fall, moved up 9 places in the bunched-at-the-front field over the fifth kilometer while teammate Grace Fetherstonhaugh pushed up 7 spots to 2nd. Canadian Fetherstonhaugh fell back to 8th from there. Meanwhile Pellicoro, who is Italian, advanced from 13th at 4K to runner-up position at the finish.

Mitchell became the Beavers’ first-ever Regionals winner and the team’s 4th-place showing, also its highest ever, should slide OSU in to the Nationals along with Cal Baptist, the team it pushed back to 5th through a tiebreaker.
