SHE FOOLED ALL OF US. No one could tell Timara Chapman had  been nursing an Achilles issue for a month. And certainly not with a PR of 120 points to win an exciting heptathlon with a 6339 score that puts her No. 9 on the all-time collegiate list. It’s also No. 2 this year among all Americans.

The Aggie senior — a transfer from NC State — needed a good performance to win as 2-time NCAA Indoor pentathlon champ Jadin O’Brien of Notre Dame also had a lifetime best at 6234.

100 Hurdles: An immediate logjam in the standings was created by PRs in three different sections by three main contenders — O’Brien (13.35), Kristīne Blaževiča of Texas (13.36) and Chapman (13.40), the fourth PR of the year for Chapman, who trailed by 7 points.

High Jump: Not surprisingly, Kentucky’s Charity Hufnagel was tops here with her yearly best of 6-1½ (1.87). Known last year as Charity Griffith at Ball State, she won last year’s open HJ at 6-4 (1.93) but has put serious attention to the multis this year. She was 3rd overall (2026) as Chapman took the overall lead at 2056 with a PR 5-11¼ (1.81).

Shot: Jenelle Rogers was a teammate of Hufnagel at Ball State last year when she PRed by more than 3ft at 51-0¼ (15.55). She didn’t throw nearly as far this year but still led all at 48-11¾ (14.93). Less than 3 inches back at 48-9/14.86 was O’Brien with her second PR of the meet. Chapman didn’t PR but recorded her second-best ever at 45-¼ (13.72) and increased her lead to 36 points, now over surprising Annika Williams of Oregon (2795). Williams — a transfer from Kentucky — was only 25th on the yearly list and gained entry just the previous Monday after the medical scratch by defending champ Pippi Lotta Enok of Oklahoma.

200: Chapman’s Aggie teammate, Joniar Thomas, led the way with a PR 23.57 and Rogers was next at 23.60. PRing for the third time of the day were O’Brien (24.16) and Chapman (24.18). Rogers had climbed to second overall at 3707 while Chapman increased her lead to 87 points at 3794. O’Brien was 3rd at 3695.

Long Jump: Thomas led her second event at 20-9¼ (6.33) ahead of PRs by Chapman (20-9/6.32), O’Brien (20-7¾/6.29) and Rogers (20-5¾/6.24) — the last trio now standing 1-2-3 overall as Chapman had a point to her lead.

Javelin: Blaževiča entered the top-3 for the first time with a PR 143-9 (43.82) behind the 155-9 (47.48) of Kansas State’s Urtė Bačianskaitė. At 5219 she still trailed Chapman (139-6/42.53), whose overall lead had grown to 116 points over O’Brien, 5459–5343. Little noticed down in the results, Rogers earned her second PR of the day (107-4/32.73) but dropped to 4th in the standings.

800: Blaževiča won the concluding race in 2:14.01 ahead of O’Brien (2:15.09) and Chapman (PR 2:15.92) as Chapman (6339) and O’Brien (6234) finished their PR scores. Blaževiča was close to a lifetime best at 6126, while Rogers recorded her third PR of the day in 2:19.40 and missed the Trials qualifying standard by 9 points at 5991.

Asked about the advice she got from Texas A&M coach Pat Henry, Chapman smiled and said, “He’s been a blessing to me. He just told me to have fun. I didn’t work it — it was all going to pay off.”
