On April 08, in Prague, Czechia. The ’83 world champion in the discus had earlier won the ’80 Moscow silver. He was also European champion in ’82. A 10-time World Ranker, he was No. 1 in ’83.
Died: Steve Cooksey, 75
On March 21, in Annapolis, Maryland. Cooksey served 29 years as head coach of Navy’s men’s program, guiding 23 athletes to All-America honors and earning 14 Patriot League team titles.
Died: Lyudmila Gurevich, 91
On April 13, in Kyyiv, Ukraine. The 1960 Olympic champion at 800 for the Soviet Union in a World Record 2:04.3 that lasted for two years. A 7-time World Ranker, she was No. 1 in ’56, ’59 & ’60.
Died: Viktor Kravchenko, 84
On April 07. The bronze medalist in the ’64 Olympic triple jump, he Ranked No. 2 that season, the only time he made the top 10.

In April. Head coach at LSU 1964–76, he coached five national champions.
Died: Foss Miller, 78
On April 06, in Vashon, Washington. In ’65 he set a High School Record with his 232-9 javelin throw. He placed 6th in the ’68 NCAA for Washington State.
Died: Craig Reedie, 84
The former president of WADA as well as VP of the IOC. He had also been a board member for the London 2012 Olympics.
Died: Ken Shannon, 89
On April 23. Head coach at Washington for 29 years, Shannon guided 18 NCAA champions while leading the Huskies to 4 top-10 national finishes. He served on two Olympic coaching staffs. ◻︎
