The ’84 gold medalist in the 100H, now 64, has been appointed CEO of SafeSport, charged with “rebooting” the agency. SafeSport is a non-profit organization authorized by Congress to combat sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bullying and harassment within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movement.

Previously the Chief Of Sports Science & Medicine and Chief Of High-Performance at USATF (and former XC coach at Indiana), Chapman has been named Chief Of Sports Performance. His department will be charged with USATF’s elite-athlete development and selection to international teams.

On January 26. A vice-president of World Athletics from 1999–07, the Chinese sports leader was instrumental in the bid for the ’08 Olympics.
Died: Fred Dwyer, 94
On January 16, in Caldwell, New Jersey. A 4-time IC4A champion for Villanova, he was NCAA runner-up in the mile in ’53. He later became a coaching legend at Manhattan, leading the program 1969–93. His team won the ’73 NCAA Indoor. He was inducted into the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame.
Died: Fernando Mamede, 74
On January 27, in Portugal; of heart issues. The former 800/1500 runner experienced his best success at 10,000, where he broke the WR in ’84. He won bronze at the ’81 World XC but otherwise had a dismal record at major meets. A 5-time World Ranker at 10,000, he was No. 1 in ’82. He was also No. 1 in the 5000 in ’83, with four Rankings overall.
Died: David Moore, 58
On December 14. The former Pitt star placed 7th in the ’90 NCAA 800 and ran on the 4x8s that placed 4th at the NCAA Indoor in ’86 & ’87. ◻︎
