Texas A&M scoring machine Tyra Gittens is predicted to tally 24 points, more than all but 9 whole teams. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)
AFTER THE REGIONALS WEEKEND we find that the NCAA women’s formchart has once again changed significantly since the previous iterations. In charts 1 (April 05) and 2 (April 27) top-rated USC had a 2-point lead — over LSU in the first, over Texas A&M in the second. Then in the third (May 20) Pat Henry’s Aggies continued their climb, holding down the leadership by 6 points over LSU, with the Trojans another 3 points back.
But our post-Regionals analysis finds A&M treading water, while USC (+8) and LSU (+4) made gains, with the result that the crystal ball now sees it as A&M by a single point over the Trojans, with another digit back to the Bengals. Obviously lots of leeway for chart-busting to come!
As is so often the case, the team battle may well come down to the climactic 4×4. Based on our current charting, as the teams toe the line LSU would be leading with its 60 points (but with a 4×4 charted not to be in the final), with USC at 53 and A&M at 52. Be sure to have your calculators handy!
Versatile Tyra Gittens remains the key to the A&M hopes, predicted to win the heptathlon, take 2nd in the HJ and 3rd in the LJ.
