As the hept favorite, possible HJ winner and probable LJ scorer, Tyra Gittens is obviously crucial to top-rated Texas A&M. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)
AFTER THE CONFERENCE WEEKEND we find that the NCAA women’s formchart has changed significantly since the previous iterations. In charts 1 (April 05) and 2 (April 27) top-rated USC had a 2-point lead — over LSU in the first, over Texas A&M in the second. In our latest round of crystal-balling, Pat Henry’s Aggies have continued their climb, now holding down the leadership by 6 points over LSU, with the Trojans another 3 points back.
A&M is tabbed to pick up wins in the 400, 4×4 & heptathlon, with backup points in the 400 (7th), 4×4 (4th), HJ (2nd & 3rd), LJ (2nd & 7th) & TJ (3rd). The huge keys for the favorites are 3-event scorer Tyra Gittens (HJ, LJ, Hept) and doubler Athing Mu (400, 4×4).
As is so often the case, the team battle may well come down to the climactic 4×4. Based on our current charting, as the teams toe the line LSU would be leading with 56 (but have no entry), with A&M at 52. A&M, even though top-rated, could then win by finishing 4th or higher, but no matter how it plays out teamwise, watch out for Athing Mu on the Aggie anchor!
