Javelin — Wiltrout In Love With Her Event
COME SEPTEMBER, Madison Wiltrout will be in line for some cash, as the points she earned while taking her first U.S. title with a toss of 201-10 (61.53) should secure a top-8 WA ranking and thus a spot in the Ultimate Championships where every competitor is guaranteed to walk away with somewhere between $10,000 and $150,000 — a significant chunk of change for a professional thrower.
The tears she shed during and after Thursday’s comp at Icahn Stadium had nothing to do with that impending windfall, though.
Ten years after setting the national high school record of 185-8 (56.59), Wiltrout has, in the words of her longtime coach Amin Nikfar, once again “fallen in love with the javelin.”
After all the “ups, downs, and sideways” she’s experienced, after all the frustration of chasing titles and coming up short including a runner-up finish at USAs in ’25, Wiltrout has embraced the joy of chucking for chucking’s sake. “She loves what she’s doing,” says Nikfar. “And she remembers that when she’s on the runway.”
The results for the 27-year-old North Carolina grad have been extraordinary this season. PRs in four of her first five comps. Wins at Drake, Halle, and the American JavFest. An invite to the upcoming Diamond League Meeting — her first — at Lausanne. And now a big breakthrough in New York.
Bucknell’s Evie Bliss, 2nd with a toss of 198-2 (60.41), has also learned to embrace the full javelin experience, including the post-comp feeling of having been “hit by a bus.” Bliss, who won her first senior title last year in Eugene, will take another shot at adding NCAA gold to her curriculum vitae in ’27 before turning her attention to the looming Olympics. /Dan McQuaid/
