NEW YORK CITY, March 08-10—The Nike Indoor Nationals might be feeling a bit of a talent drain to its rival meet in Boston, but the Armory Classic still delivered some great performances for fans. Most notable on the boys side was the 13:59.69 that it took Patrick Koon (FL) to win the 5000. The Stanford-bound senior passed Manny Perez (CA) in the final 400 to move to No. 4 all-time. Perez ran 14:01.61 (No. 6 all-time), while Byron Grevious (NH) ran 14:12.66 to move to No. 8.
“I knew if I could just go for it that last 400 that I’d do good,” said Koon.
Montana senior Nathan Neil won the 2M in 8:47.96, good for No. 12 all-time. The hurdles went to Abdoul Sy-Savane (GA), who clocked 7.76. In the distance medley, a great battle saw Crater High (Central Point, Oregon) move to No. 8 all-time at 10:00.06, holding off fast-closing Buchholz (FL) which utilized a 4:02.87 anchor by Riley Smith to become No. 10 with its 10:00.25. Cathedral of Los Angeles was 3rd in 10:00.67 (No. 12 all-time).
Buchholz won the 4 x Mile the next day in 17:25.44 (Smith 4:10.29), and on Sunday Smith took the mile in 4:06.68.
