Northeast: Syracuse & Graham Blanks (Harvard)
Contoocook, New Hampshire — Olympian Graham Blanks, the defending national champion, cruised to a convincing win in the Northeast Regional, running well behind early leader Talha Syed of Columbia until before the 8K mark, when he burst into the lead, passing that post in 24:05.2. Over the final loop at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds he built a margin of more than 17 seconds to give Harvard a much-needed low stick in 29:34.7. It was just his third race of the fall.
Runner-up Sam Lawler of Syracuse (29:52.5) got the honor of leading his team to victory, though, as the No. 17-ranked Orange beat No. 20 Harvard, 75–97. Next came Iona’s leaders, Matt Rankin (29:56.0) and Lachlan Wellington (29:56.9). Unranked Cornell, led by 5th-placer Derek Amicon (29:59.9), would finish 3rd with 106 points, just ahead of No. 29 Iona’s 108. Yale took 5th (183) and Providence 6th (208).

Mid-Atlantic: Villanova & Liam Murphy
University Park, Pennsylvania – A 1-2 finish from Liam Murphy and Marco Langon helped No. 14 Villanova to regain its title. Coach Marcus O’Sullivan’s Big East champs put together a 50-point performance to stay safely ahead of No. 18 Princeton and No. 29 Georgetown, who each scored 80, Princeton getting the nod. Navy was 4th just a tick behind at 81, with Penn State farther back at 129.
Murphy, the defending champ as well as the Big East winner, stayed with the leaders until the final loop, when he put some distance on the pack. He crossed in 29:22.8, with Langon at 29:32.1. Penn’s Dylan Throop was 3rd in 29:34.6. One of the fastest finishes came from 4th-placer Brian DiCola of Penn State (29:37.1), who passed a half-dozen on the final loop. LaSalle’s MacCallum Rowe finished 5th in 29:39.5.

Southeast: Virginia & George Couttie (Virginia Tech)
Rock Hill, South Carolina — Gary Martin and Will Anthony led No. 13 Virginia to an upset win of No. 5 Wake Forest in the Southeast Regional. Vin Lannana’s Cavaliers scored 79 just ahead of the 85 of No. 11 North Carolina. No. 24 Eastern Kentucky came next with 105 points. Unranked Virginia Tech (128) also beat Wake Forest’s 134. No. 22 Furman finished 6th with 141.
George Couttie, a 19-year-old Brit who transferred to Virginia Tech from Div. II Charleston, moved to the front after the halfway point and kicked best at the end, crossing in 29:41.7 ahead of the 29:44.3 of Eastern Kentucky frosh Justine Kipkoech. Furman’s Dylan Schubert followed in 29:49.8. Kentucky frosh Collins Kiprop Kipngok placed 4th in 29:51.3, ahead of North Carolina’s Ethan Strand and Parker Wolfe, finishing together in 29:53.6. Virginia’s Martin (8th, 30:00.3) and Anthony (9th, 30:00.6) both made the top 10.

South: Alabama & Dismus Lokira
Tallahassee, Florida — No. 10 Alabama ran to victory at the South Regional with an impressive 1-2-3 sweep, improving on its 3rd-place finish a year ago. Frosh Dismus Lokira went to the front immediately, and held that position until Collins Kipkemboi of Kennesaw State caught him at 5K. Then he grabbed his lead back, fighting off an 8K challenge (23:52.8) from another frosh, Allan Kiplagat of Middle Tennessee.
A kilo later, he and his teammates, Victor Kiprop and Dennis Kipruto, ran together. Nearing the finish, Lokira unleased a powerful kick to take the win in 29:30.8, with Kiprop (29:34.4) and Kipruto (29:42.9) following. Tennessee’s Christopher Middleton-Pearson grabbed 4th in 29:44.8, with Kiplagat 5th at 29:47.6. A strong team challenge from Ole Miss was led by Toby Gillen (6th, 29:51.1) and Elyas Ayyoub (7th, 29:53.9).
Alabama held off unranked Mississippi, 80-91, with Tennessee (109) edging Florida State (112) for 3rd.

Great Lakes: Notre Dame & William Zegarski (Butler)
Norton, Ohio — No. 9-ranked Wisconsin ran with its usual imposing pack: the top 5 all finishing within 3 seconds, but that wasn’t enough to hold off an impressive finish from No. 19 Notre Dame. The Irish put 3 ahead of the first Badger and totaled 70, with Wisconsin grabbing the second auto-qualifier at 82. No. 21 Butler, with 3 in the top 9, nipped Michigan State for 3rd, both scoring 104, and Purdue took 5th with 149.
It came down to the kick between sophs for the individual title. Purdue’s Douglas Buckeridge thought he had it and started spreading his arms, only to see William Zegarski of Butler zip past on his left to edge him by two-tenths, 29:12.7–29:12.9. Toledo’s Dominic Serem finished 3rd (29:14.1), ahead of Akron’s Bismack Kipchirchir (29:15.4) and Notre Dame’s Carter Solomon (29:22.9).

Midwest: Oklahoma State & Denis Kipngetich
Peoria, Illinois — Oklahoma State’s Denis Kipngetich proved the best of a very tough international field, as imports took the first 6 places in the Midwest. However, it was Oklahoma’s Thomas Cheruiyot who had taken the race out hard, leading by nearly 7 seconds at 5K (14:30.8). Kipngetich was happy to bide his time and followed teammate Laban Kipkemboi past Cheruiyot after the 7K mark. He then hammered an 8:22 for the final 3K to win in 28:51.5 over Kipkemboi (29:06.3) by nearly 15 seconds.
Iowa State’s Robin Kwemoi Bera and Said Mechaal both clocked 29:09.4. Abraham Chelangam of Oral Roberts took 5th (29:12.3), then two more for the Cowboys, Brian Musau and Victor Shitsama (both 29:17.4). Cheruiyot fell back to 8th in 29:18.5.
Teamwise, No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State couldn’t have run more confidently. At 2K the Cowboys were 9th with 209 points. By the time they got to the finish, they had whacked that score down to 25 to beat No. 4 Iowa State’s 43.

South Central: Arkansas & Kirami Yego
College Station, Texas — With No. 3 Arkansas the only ranked team in the field, a big win was understandable. To do it, the Razorbacks swept the first three places en route to a 33-point tally. On a warm sunny day, those low sticks easily handled a Tulane squad that also had 3 in the top 9, but ended up scoring 76 points ahead of the 84 of Texas. It will be Tulane’s first trip to nationals since 1998.
“We went out just planning to do a little tempo, but the tempo was at 4:40 pace,” said winner Kirami Yego. “We maintained that until the finish line.” Yego’s 29:09.4 put him ahead of teammates Timothy Chesonin (29:11.4) and Patrick Kiprop (29:11.8). In 4th came Texas senior Isaac Alonzo (29:12.9), then Tulane’s top two, Jack Jennings (29:21.1) and Bernard Cheruiyot (29:23.3).

Mountain: BYU & Solomon Kipchoge (Texas Tech)
Reno, Nevada — BYU’s squad is no strangers to snow and freezing conditions (not to mention some altitude). They weren’t the only ones, though. The No. 1 Cougars had plenty of competition on the Washoe County Golf Course, managing a 9-point win over No. 6 New Mexico (52–61) with No. 8 Northern Arizona close behind at 71.
“The approach today was to run it like a preliminary heat in track,” said BYU assistant Ryan Waite. “Now it’s just about recovery to be ready for 8 days from now.”
After a blazing start, Texas Tech’s Solomon Kipchoge throttled back. At 5K (14:33.3) he led a pack of three that included teammate Ernest Cheruiyot. With a mile to go, Kipchoge had 5 seconds on Cheruiyot and another 5 on New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel. He took the win in 28:55.9, with Samuel chasing him in 2nd (28:59.2) and Cheruiyot 3rd in 29:17.6. BYU leader Casey Clinger ran 4th in 29:24.9, with Northern Arizona’s David Mullarkey 5th in 29:26.0.

West: Washington & Evans Kurui (Washington State)
Colfax, Washington — For only the second time in 40 years, Washington’s Huskies took the West Regional title after a thrilling back-and-forth battle with Oregon and Stanford. Washington, ranked No. 12 going in, was in 4th place at the 5K, and after moving to the lead, fell behind Stanford by 10 points with a kilometer to go.
Fast finishes gave coach Andy Powell’s Huskies a 2-point win over No. 15 Oregon, 66–68, with No. 7 Stanford at 73.
Evans Kurui, running on his home course, showed that he is indeed a force heading into Nationals. The Washington State frosh had leads of up to 30 seconds in the race before he crossed the line in 28:53.7, well ahead of Portland’s Matt Strangio (29:08.4). Cal Baptist’s Valentin Soca was 3rd in 29:09.
