Northeast: Iona & Graham Blanks (Harvard)

Bronx, New York — Graham Blanks kept his undefeated record going, the Harvard junior clocking 29:31.6 at Van Cortlandt Park after moving up through the pack and taking the lead around 8K. He finished ahead of Iona’s 1-2 punch, Damien Dilcher at 29:40.1 and Joshua DeSouza at 29:40.8. Perry MacKinnon of Syracuse ran 4th (29:43.4) and Harvard’s Acer Iverson 5th (29:48.9).

The race turned out to be a struggle for favored No. 8 Syracuse. In 2nd at 4K, the Orange fell to Iona’s powerful move from the back of the pack, with Harvard also pacing its way past. No. 27 Iona, with 151 points near halfway, improved to 40 points at the finish. Similarly, No. 15 Harvard went from 125 points to 57.

That put both well ahead of Syracuse’s 97, while early leader Providence placed 4th with 145. It was the first Regional win for the Gaels since ’12.

Mid-Atlantic: Princeton & Liam Murphy (Villanova)

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania — Villanova may have produced the top two finishers in Liam Murphy and Haftu Strintzos, but No. 16 Princeton was able to upend the No. 11 Wildcats, 41–73 to take the team title. The Ivy League champs, coached by Jason Vigilante, improved from a 3rd-place finish last year.

Southeast: North Carolina & Dylan Schubert (Furman)

Spartanburg, South Carolina — After No. 5 North Carolina sealed the win in the Southeast Regional, the formchart got considerably jumbled. Instead of No. 13 Virginia or No. 14 Furman, it was No. 28 Eastern Kentucky that grabbed the second team-qualifying spot.

With 4 in the top 9, the Tar Heels handily secured the win with 38 points. Eastern Kentucky surprised with its top 3 finishing 8–10–11, and ended up scoring 72, well ahead of NC State (106 in 3rd) or Wake Forest (137 in 4th). Virginia had a rough day, scoring 140 to finish 5th, and Furman had it rougher yet, in 8th with 252.

In the closest of races, Furman junior Dylan Schubert kicked best, taking the win in 28:51.2, just inches ahead of North Carolina’s Parker Wolfe and Alex Phillip (both 28:51.3). Charlotte’s Nickolas Scudder ran 4th in 28:55.3 and Luke Tewalt of Wake Forest was 5th in 28:59.7.

South: Tennessee & Hillary Cheruiyot (Alabama)

Gainesville, Florida — Alabama came in as the top-ranked team in the South at No. 18, but it was No. 21 Tennessee and No. 29 Florida State who raced best. The Vols matched their women’s win with a 68-point performance to edge Florida State’s 71, with Alabama finishing 3rd at 86 despite a 1-2 finish.

Alabama’s stars moved to the front early, defending champion Viktor Kiprop and Hillary Cheruiyot rising to the lead of a huge pack at the mile (4:44.7). Then Cheruiyot forged a breakaway, getting about 35m ahead of the pack. That lead grew to nearly 100m at halfway and 150 at 8K. Teammate Kiprop narrowed the gap over the last K but couldn’t catch him, Cheruiyot taking the win in 28:26.8 over Kiprop’s 28:29.9.

In 3rd, Yaseen Abdalla led Tennessee’s successful title defense in 28:41.3. Penn State’s David Mullarkey ran 4th in 28:45.0 with Jason Bowers of East Tennessee in 5th (28:51.3).

Great Lakes: Butler & Bob Liking (Wisconsin)

Verona, Wisconsin — Taking down the heavily-favored defending champion Badger men on their home course would figure to be a daunting challenge, but Matt Roe’s Butler squad, just 4th last year, pulled off the big upset this time around. The No. 12 Bulldogs scored just 43 points to top No. 5 Wisconsin’s 70. Michigan, No. 25 coming in, beat No. 17 Notre Dame for 3rd, 93–95. Michigan State got 5th with 127.

In a close finish, it was the Badgers who went 1–2 in the individual race, junior Bob Liking winning his second straight by edging teammate Jackson Sharp, 29:40.9–29:41.2, a step ahead of Michigan’s Tom Brady in 29:41.8. Then came Butler: Florian LePallec in 4th (29:43.8), William Zegarski in 5th (29:44.1). Matthew Forrester (9th) and Will Minnette (10th) also made the top 10, with Jesse Hamlin in 15th.

Stillwater, Oklahoma — Dave Smith’s Cowboy squad didn’t hold anything back. The No. 2-ranked team nationally, after winning its fourth-straight Big 12 crown, steamrollered the Regional competition with a stunning 19-point tally.

That handily took care of No. 20 Iowa State and its 56 points. Tulsa finished 3rd, its 131 points topping Loyola’s on the tiebreaker. Then came South Dakota State at 196.

At halfway, the Cowboys had already made their intentions known, with frosh Denis Kipngetich and Brian Musau running together at the front alongside soph Fouad Messaoudi. Kipngetich pulled away for a solo win in 29:39.2. Musau finished 2nd in 29:49.2, Messaoudi 3rd in 30:03.5. Frosh Adisu Guadia (5th, 30:12.4) and senior Alex Meier (8th, 30:26.1) completed the Oklahoma State scoring.

South Central Men: Texas & Patrick Kiprop (Arkansas)

Fayetteville, Arkansas — The home-course Razorbacks came in as the favorites, ranked No. 7 nationally, but the No. 9 Longhorns turned the tables. Texas put 3 in the top 5 and all its scorers in the top 13 to beat Arkansas, 34-52. Tulane would be 3rd with 77 points.

Longhorn senior Devin Hart did much of the leading, but on the final loop succumbed to the fast finishes of Razorbacks Patrick Kiprop (28:38.8) and Kirami Yego (28:43.0). Hart, though, would have the satisfaction of finishing 3rd (28:44.6) and seeing two of his teammates next across the line, Rodger Rivera in 28:59.5 and Isaac Alonso in 29:18.7. With Haftu Knight in 9th and Nathaneal Berhane 13th both ahead of the third Razorback, that meant the win.

In its previous race, Texas had only finished 3rd in the Big 12. This is its fifth Regional title in school history.

Mountain: Northern Arizona & Habtom Samuel (New Mexico)

Lubbock, Texas — New Mexico put up a powerful top 3, but No. 1 Northern Arizona had depth that could not be challenged.

Texas Tech’s Vincent Koech led for the first 3M before fading badly. By 8K, it was Northern Arizona’s Drew Bosley and Nico Young leading the crowded pack.

In the final 800, the Lobos moved. Habtom Samuel kicked best, with teammates Lukas Kiprop on his shoulder and Evans Kiplagat a stride behind. Only defending champion Nico Young could stay close. At the finish, Young’s kick caught two of his rivals but Samuel would be the winner in 28:57.6. Young clocked 28:59.6, with Kiprop at 29:00.0 and Kiplagat at 29:03.9.

Fifth would go to Northern Arizona junior Kang Nyoak (29:10.0). Bosley (7th, 29:12.2), Aaron Las Heras (8th, 29:12.5) and Brody Hasty (14th, 29:22.0) accounted for the rest of the Lumberjack points.
