NCAA Cross Country Preview — Overview/Schedule

This fall’s collegiate harrier “Big Dance” will be run on Indiana State’s LaVern Gibson course, frequently a nationals site, though 7 years have passed since its last hosting in 2019. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

WHEN THE NCAA XC Championships goes off on November 21 — its 88th men’s edition and 46th for women — the occasion will mark the fourteenth time since 2002 that Indiana State has hosted the event.

Terre Haute’s spectator-friendly LaVern Gibson Championship Course with its rolling grass surface will be familiar to many coaches, and arguably less so to a majority of athletes, for the last time the Sycamores hosted the nationals was in 2019. The BYU men earned their first team crown that year. So did the Arkansas women.

Perhaps, with the trend toward foreign frosh recruits racing as impact runners for many programs almost as soon as they arrive on campus, course familiarity is a less relevant factor than it once was?

T&FN’s geography/harrier course expert Sean Hartnett reports footing on the Gibson course, built atop a former landfill capped with clay, varies considerably with conditions on the day.

Hartnett assesses, “The clay cap seals the surface so water doesn’t drain into the soil well, such that even with a heavy dew it can be sloppy. With some rain it quickly becomes a mudder.

“OK, that was circa 15–20 years ago when grass was rather thin. Thicker grass can add firmer elements to the footstrike. One of the mentioned improvements was a sprinkler system (to improve the density of grass).

“Footing makes it a bit slower than average. In the positive it has some long straight stretches and sweeping curves so you can keep your speed up without any bottlenecks. Near the finish there are a couple switchback curves that restrict flow — but they are fenced in so you won’t have people cutting.

“Thickening grass versus clay cap — only November 21 will tell.”

Much fodder for speculation, as are our 4 detailed NCAA XC Preview sections that follow:
