A History Of The NCAA Championships, 1921–2023

Texas’s ’23 hosting of the NCAA was its No. 8; only Oregon (18) and Chicago (13) have more. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)

THIS PROJECT began as a simple pamphlet compiled by T&FN Editor E. Garry Hill, listing the top 6 finishers of the NCAA Championships from its inception in 1921 through the meet of 1981. The ’81 meet was the last one that was men-only and was also the last with just 6 places scored.

In the years since, the project has grown and grown, with thousands of bits of missing data slowly being filled in (yay Google!). Eventually, with ink & paper publications falling so far out of favor, it was decided to bring the project online instead of original plans for a physical book. This continues to be a work in progress, with more and more historical sources coming available, leading to the addition of more data. All-in-all, the information as presented here is now more than 1000 easy-to-read PDF pages.
