ACC Champs — Frosh Football Player Tears To 400 Lead

WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA, May 15–17 — “I’m not done yet,” posted Florida State frosh Micahi Danzy after his eye-opening performances in the ACC Championships. Running in the 400, the two-sport athlete (he’s a wide receiver in the fall) blasted his PR from 45.00 down to a collegiate leader 44.38 to become the No. 3 Junior in U.S. history, just two weeks after turning 19.

“My coach said kick it at the Demons’ logo, so I just listened to what my coach said,” said the victor of his strong finish.

Danzy beat another freshman, Duke’s Joseph Taylor, who finished in 44.98. This came an hour after he ran third leg on the winning 4×1 for the Seminoles, which clocked 39.05.

It was Duke that took the men’s team title by a mere 4 points over North Carolina, 86–82, with Cal (79.83) and Virginia Tech (78.33) close behind. Simen Guttormsen won the vault for the Blue Devils at 18-4½ (5.60), with hammer thrower Christian Toro (224-3/68.35) being the squad’s only other victor.

Parker Wolfe led the North Carolina attack. He won Thursday’s 10K in 28:51.09, taking command in the final three laps and finishing with a 57.25, safely ahead of Stanford’s Lex Young at 28:55.29.

On Saturday, Wolfe followed the quick early pacing of Wake Forest’s Rocky Hansen through 3K (7:57.57) before speeding up to finish the 5000 in 13:13.49, far ahead of teammate Ethan Strand (13:37.35) and Stanford’s Cole Sprout (13:39.46). “Once we got to lap 6 out there I figured maybe he was a pacer,” said Wolfe. It was his seventh career ACC title. Strand had earlier won his third ACC 1500 in 3:44.78, finishing it off with a 51.67.

Virginia Tech’s Christian Jackson unleashed a stunner in the 800, going out hard in an effort to stay ahead of Clemson’s Brian Kweyei. The junior passed halfway in 51.00 and held on for a 1:44.83 collegiate leader, with fast-closing Kweyei also scoring a PR at 1:45.09.

“These guys have such strong kicks,” said Jackson. “It’s really just about getting out fast and going.”

The top field performance came from discus World Record holder Mykolas Alekna, who produced the No. 10 throw in collegiate history with his 229-2 (69.86) for Cal. In the javelin, Miami’s Devoux Deysel, a South African, launched the spear to a PR 270-2 (82.35), winning by more than 47 feet.

In another close battle, Virginia took the women’s trophy with 93 points to Louisville’s 89. Key final day points came from 1500 runner Margot Appleton, who took the win from Clemson’s Silvia Jelelgo with a 61.20 final lap, 4:11.28–4:11.61. “I made my move when it felt right,” she said.

Gladys Chepngetich of Clemson ran 1:59.94 to win a swift 800 over Makayla Paige of North Carolina (2:00.21), after Stanford’s Roisin Willis led through 400 in 58.10 and fell back to 3rd in 2:00.43. NC State took both the steeple (Angelina Napoleon 9:27.85) and 5000 (Grace Hartman (15:12.03).

Florida State’s Shenese Walker took the sprints in windy times of 10.99 and 22.72; she also ran on the winning 4 x 100 (43.15).

Louisville’s Jayden Ulrich won the shot at 57-7½ (17.56) and the next day took the discus (206-4/62.89). Notre Dame heptathlete Jadin O’Brien scored a meet record 6220, just 14 points shy of her PR.
