For the sixth consecutive time the bulk of the U.S. Olympic team will be chosen at Hayward Field (see “Last Lap”).

Inducted: USTFCCCA Coaches Hall Of Fame
A half-dozen coaches comprise the Class of ’26—Terry Aldrich (Middlebury), Mike Barnett (Azusa Pacific), Chris Bucknam (Northern Iowa, Arkansas), Sue Parks (Eastern Michigan), Russ Rogers (Fairleigh-Dickinson, Ohio State), Ray Treacy (Providence).

Died: Livio Berruti, 87
On August 09, in Turin, Italy. The winner of the 200 at the ’60 Olympics, tying the WR of 20.5. He also anchored the Italian 4×1 to 4th. In ’64, he placed 5th in the 200. A 4-time World Ranker at 200, he was No. 1 in ’60 and ’61. He Ranked three times at 100, with a best of No. 4 in ’61.

Died: Maurice Herriott, 86
On August 24. The British steeplechaser won silver in the ’64 Olympics while working fulltime as a motorcycle mechanic. A 4-time World Ranker, he was No. 2 in ’64.

Died: Celina Jesionowska, 92
On July 22, in Stara Wola, Poland. The Polish sprinter contributed to a bronze medal in the 4×1 at the Rome Olympics.

Died: Jack Mortland, 91
On August 05, of cancer. The former Bowling Green runner turned to walking after college and made the ’64 Olympic team, finishing 17th in the 20K. He served for many years as part of our Rankings team

Died: Fengrong Zheng, 89
On August 25. The Chinese high jumper was 20 when she cleared a WR 5-9¾ (1.77), becoming the first from her country to ever claim an all-time best. She later served as VP of the Chinese federation. Grand daughter Nina Schultz became an NCAA heptathlon runner-up for Kansas State. ◻︎
