OSTRAVA, CZECHIA, June 16 — Coming from behind once the sprinters hit the straightaway, Noah Lyles faced a challenge in the rarely-run 150 at the Ostrava Golden Spike stop on the Continental Tour. Not only was South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile well ahead and moving past Ireland’s Benjamin Richardson into the lead, but as it turned out, Lyles would need to run the fastest time ever on a curve just to win.
He dug down and did just that, passing the 24-year-old about 40m away from the line, and maintaining his form until he crossed in 14.67. The mark took 0.25 off the previous curve best of 14.92 that Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson ran in Miramar in April. (Note that T&FN recognizes Usain Bolt’s straight 14.35 from the Manchester City Games in ’09 as the world fastest at this distance.)
Behind him, Dambile went 14.78 and Australia’s Gout Gout just missed the old standard with his 14.96.
“It was about time. The World Record was quite slow,” said Lyles. “This feeling [of being the fastest], it is nothing new. I said I could have run a better turn. It is very hard to get used to running in a staggered 150 start. You know we do it in practice but that is without blocks.
“But all in all, I think that it was really good. If you want to be the best, be you. That’s all it takes. Who would be sad with a World Record?”
The women’s side featured an intriguing matchup at 800, where Audrey Werro continued to stamp herself as the sensation of the year and Femke Broeders-Bol burnished her own 2-lap rookie credentials considerably.
The two were the only ones who followed the pacemaker (55.83). Werro started charging after 500, with Broeders-Bol making a game attempt to stay on her. Finally, with 200 left, the Swiss went into overdrive and flew to the win in a meet record 1:54.45. The former hurdler finished 2nd in a PR 1:57.13.
“I was expecting a very fast time but in the end, it was a little bit too hard because I stayed alone in the last meters,” said the winner.
Broeders-Bol said she was quite pleased with her effort: “The race went pretty much as expected. I knew Audrey was super strong, but she also helped me a lot in the race. I was not even looking for any specific time, but 1:57 is very good.”
In the men’s mile, Nathan Green caught Vincent Ciattei at the line, 3:49.44–3:49.51. “I was going for it at the finish, with only the win in mind. Vincent got the better of me last time, so I knew it was time for revenge.”
A quick 1000 featured Peter Bol running an Australian Record 2:15.13 ahead of Samuel Chapple of the Netherlands (2:15.20), Marino Bloudek of Croatia (2:15.40) and Hobbs Kessler, who had been in 2nd moments earlier before his 2:15.44 PR in 4th. He moves to No. 4 among Americans all-time.
Morocco’s Salaheddine Ben Yazide won the steeple in 8:09.88, with Furman alum Carson Williams in 5th setting a PR 8:16.69.
Lurdes Gloria Manuel of Czechia took the 400 in 49.74, improving her PR set in Rome two weeks ago.
