PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, June 18-21 — A win at Brooks PR did nothing to make sophomore Jasmine Jackson (Winslow, Atco, New Jersey) the hurdle favorite at New Balance. In the prelims, she ran 13.48 but was 0.03 behind the meet record and nation-leading 13.18 that Kassidy Hopkins of Bullis (Potomac, Maryland) ran in a later heat.
In the semis, Hopkins hurdled 13.27; Jackson followed with a 13.24 PR. Not bad, but few expected the way Jackson performed on Sunday in the final. Running in lane 5, with Hopkins in 6, the two hammered each other over 10 hurdles. The soph never relented. She crossed the line just inches in front, in 13.04 to Hopkins’ 13.06. They both moved into the top 10 all-time.
She told Dyestat, “I had no thoughts of losing in my head. I came in with the mentality of a winner and left with the W.”
A more dominating win came to Brooklyn Lyttle (Seton, Bladensburg, Maryland) in the long jump. Any of her three fair leaps would have been good enough to win, but her last attempt took her out to a HS-leading 21-3¼ to give the Belizean a margin of over a foot with her national record.
In the mile, Mallory Weller (Concordia, Fort Wayne, Indiana) managed a 63.42 final circuit to take the win in a meet record 4:31.78 over Abigail Hennessy (Academy, Westfort, Massachusetts), who ran 4:33.18. Weller moved to No. 8 all-time.
The only team to win more than one relay was Bullis, taking the 4×1 in 45.00 and the 4×4 in 3:34.12, the No. 5 performance ever. The latter owed much to a stirring, come-from-behind anchor from Mya Arrendell, who split 50.85. She needed every bit of it, as Saniah Varnado of Wilson (Long Beach, California) had split 51.33 for the runnerup time of 3:34.27, the No. 6 performance ever.
The 4 x Mile featured an impressive win by Pioneer (Ann Arbor). Last fall, Natasza Dudek won both the NXN and Brooks cross country nationals. Here, she focused on the relays. After her teammates brought the stick through three miles in 2nd place, Dudek took over and ran 4:44.30 to take the victory in 19:46.97, the No. 6 time ever. The team from Shenendehowa Central (Clifton Park, New York), running here as Legacy, hit 19:52.09 in 2nd.
In the 100, Sianni Wynn (Pennsauken, New Jersey) and Arrendell battled all the way to the line, clocking nearly identical 11.27s; Wynn’s was 0.006 faster for the win. Two days later in the 200, Wynn and Vanessa Waite (Lake Minneola, Minneola, Florida) were fighting their way to another close decision when Malise Brown (Cass Tech, Detroit) flew past both in the final strides to steal the victory in a windy 22.94. Brown, who had a PR of 23.94 coming into this season, had just an hour earlier PRed (53.66) in taking 2nd in the 400 to Olivia Harris (Buford, Georgia), who ran 52.80.
A pair of meet records also fell in the distances. Averi Lowen (Bowdon, Georgia) led from the start to win the 5000 by more than 20 seconds on the opening night, clocking 16:14.37. The next day, the 2M went to Maggie McCormick (Bay Shore, New York) who clocked 9:50.81, topping the 9:54.09 by Katy Zang (Teays Valley, Ashville, Ohio).
