NCAA Women’s 400 — Oakley CR, Whyte Sub-49 After Stretch Battle

GEORGIA SENIOR and NCAA Indoor champ Dejanea Oakley began her semi as the 2026 world leader at 400 meters. Her 48.92 at the SEC championships, ahead of Arkansas’ Kaylin Brown and Sanaria Butler, was only 0.03 behind the Collegiate Record. Those three, plus USC’s Madison Whyte (runner-up in the 200 at last year’s meet) — all sub-50 seconds this season — appeared to be the sharpest of the entrants.

Oakley and Butler controlled the first semi, leading from the gun and easing in with 49.93–50.53 clockings. Iowa State’s Rachel Joseph came on fast in the last 150 to nab a finals spot with her 50.97.

Duke’s Braelyn Baker led off the final curve in the second semi and hung on for a 51.15 qualifier, as she was passed by Whyte (50.73) and Tennessee’s Javonya Valcourt (50.75).

Brown, owner of relay gold and silver medals from the 2024 Olympics, went out very fast in semi 3, amassed a big lead, then eased off. With 50 meters remaining, Boston College soph Sydney Segalla took over and recorded a new PR of 50.31. Brown’s 50.62 was automatic, and Southeast Louisiana’s Onyah Onyinye Favour took the final spot at 51.00.

Two days later, they went to their marks, with Brown in 4, Whyte in 5, Oakley in 6, and Segalla, Butler and Valcourt in the outer lanes.

Oakley and Whyte were off fastest, but Brown caught both running into the wind down the backstraight, and actually led at 200 in 23.3, ahead of Oakley 23.6 and Whyte 23.7.

Whyte was fastest on the curve, passing Brown at 300 and moving up to Oakley. Those two were equal with 100 remaining, a meter ahead of Brown, with Butler 2 back, 3 to Valcourt and Baker, and 5 to Segalla.

Whyte held a slight lead on Oakley for 60 meters down the straight, both with arms pumping and pushing hard in a great battle. Only in the final 20 meters could Oakley gradually edge ahead. She crossed the line in 48.79, a new record, while the Trojan junior became the third collegian under 49 seconds with her 48.97.

Behind them, Valcourt closed fastest to pass Brown, and Segalla edged Butler with another strong finish.

Asked about taking down erstwhile Arkansas Razorback Nickisha Pryce’s 2-year-old CR set in the ’24 final, Oakley said, “We’ve been working towards this, and this morning with my coach, we were going through a visualization of my race, and we’re saying, ‘You can get this record, just go out there and do what we’ve been doing in practice, and it will come.’ I felt the girl [Whyte], she was a little bit in front of me, and I didn’t panic. This is the best part of my race; all I have to do is just wait until the perfect time to just kick, like I always do.”
