NCAA Women’s Triple Jump — Back-And-Forth Face-Off To Foreman

The Indoor runner-up, Shantae Foreman became Clemson’s second TJ champion. Patricia Mamona (2010-11) was the first. (MIKE SCOTT)

IT WAS ALWAYS going to be a battle between Shantae Foreman and Sharifa Davronova. The two rivals sat atop the collegiate list. Foreman, a Clemson senior from Jamaica, had the year’s best jump with her 46-6 (14.17) from the indoor season. Davronova, the new arrival to Oregon from Uzbekistan, had won the Big 10 with her 46-4¼ (14.13) and was favored in the formchart.

Davronova led round 1 at 45-2¼ (13.77) as Foreman fouled. In round 2, Foreman got on the board in the top position with her 46-4¾ (14.14). Davronova, following directly, nearly matched that, spanning 46-4¼ (14.13).

The next round produced distances better than anyone else would reach but no change in the order, as Foreman went 45-11¾ (14.01) and Davronova 45-4¼ (13.82).

The shift for the finals came, with Florida’s Asia Phillips holding 3rd at 44-6¼ (13.57) and Kansas State’s Destini Smith 4th at 44-4¾ (13.53). Daniela Wamokpego, winner of the Indoor title, could only manage a windy 43-5¾ (13.25) for 11th. Katharine Graman of Illinois, No. 4 on the formchart, fouled out.

In the finals, Davronova started with a 45-11¾ (14.01); Foreman went for a big one and fouled. In round 5, it reversed, with Davronova fouling and Foreman landing at 45-½ (13.73).

The real drama came in the final round. Smith hit a 45-3 (13.79) to move into 3rd. Davronova, hoping to maximize points for the host Ducks, still in team contention at that point, bounced to snatch the lead by a mere centimeter with a windy 46-5¼ (14.15).

Foreman wasn’t having any of that. She explained, “When she jumped and passed me, I didn’t look at the board, I didn’t see her mark, I didn’t know, I just heard the crowd react, and what I had to do is to calm myself down, refocus myself again, focus on myself on what I have to do, be patient, be disciplined, and trust the process.”

It worked. She hit the board square and bounced a 46-8¾ (14.24) to secure the victory for Clemson.

“To be honest,” she said, “I came here to win, and I did just that, having the mindset that I have to be patient, I have to be calm, I have to focus on myself and not my competitors, because at the end of the day, I’m competing against the tape and whatever is measured.”
