The 2-year war in Ethiopia’s Tigray province had a devastating effect on the sport, says the president of the Tigray Athletics Federation. Plenty of track coaches have had tracks named after them. George Williams, the coach at St. Augustine’s for over four decades and the 2004 Olympics USA men’s head, may be the first to have a freeway interchange named in his honor. Jake Wightman, the ’22 world champ in the 1500, recently talked to The Guardian about rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen: “He is very good at time trialing. The ’23 World Championships, for all its triumphs, also saw an increase in social media abuse of athletes. A WA study looked at nearly 450,000 social media posts in 16 languages and found the incidents of abuse had greatly increased from ’22. Nearly 90% of the abuse came on X (formerly Twitter), where there was a 500% increase over the previous year…

The Paris medals will have a novel ingredient — a piece of the Eiffel Tower itself. Seb Coe took a pessimistic view of drugs in a recent podcast, saying, “Will we ever get to the utopia of a sport that is drug-free? No, of course not, it’s human nature, risk versus reward. If you’re a street kid, in some countries the risk versus reward is huge and if you get caught and are returned to the street then that’s nothing ventured nothing gained, so it is a challenge.”
