Points in the 4×4 project as vital for the team hopes of Arkansas, winner of the event at the last three NCAAs indoors & out. (KIRBY LEE/IMAGE OF SPORT)
INDOORS, ARKANSAS had the luxury of being defeated in the climactic 4×4 — a race the Hogs appeared to have won — and still captured the NCAA team title. Chris Johnson’s Razorbacks are a power to be reckoned with outdoors, but are projected to need 1st-place points in the long relay in order to claim another crown.
The way our first formchart of the year sees things, the meet will go into the ultimate race with SEC rival LSU holding a 49–41 lead. The Bengals will be able to keep things interesting even if they score only the single point we project.
Successful defenses of ’23 wins look to be relatively frequent, 9 figuring to do it: Maia Ramsden (Harvard) 1500, Olivia Markezich (Notre Dame) steeple, Parker Valby (Florida) 5000, Savannah Sutherland (Michigan) 400H, Ackelia Smith (Texas) LJ, Axelina Johansson (Nebraska) SP, Stephanie Ratcliffe (Georgia) HT, Rhema Otabor (Nebraska) JT, Pippi Lotta Enok (Oklahoma) hept.
