What heptathlete Anna Hall does — or doesn’t do — in the 400H will go a long way towards deciding the team title. (ERROL ANDERSON/THE SPORTING IMAGE)
THE RACE FOR No. 1 in NCAA Championships women’s team scoring is getting crowded as a bevy of other powerhouse schools is nipping at Texas’s heels. The Longhorn margin over Florida is a single point, with just another 4 back to LSU, 5 to Texas Tech. And projected 5th-placer Texas A&M is only 9 points away from the top.
It’s important to note that these scores make the bold assumption that versatile Gator Anna Hall, our projected heptathlon winner , also goes for the 400H and picks up 3rd-place points there. The catch is that the 400H final is slated to go off only 13:00 before the hept’s 800. It’s perhaps more likely that she’ll be called on for 4×4 duty 38:00 after the start of the 800. We’ll know more after the Regionals.
When it comes to the event winners, no fewer than 9 new No. 1s are now in place: Favour Ofili (LSU) 200, Aaliyah Miller (Baylor) 800, Lauren Ryan (Florida State) 10,000, Alia Armstrong (LSU) 100H, Kentucky 4×4, Lamara Distin (Texas A&M) HJ, Gabriela Leon (Louisville) PV, Monae’ Nichols (Texas Tech) LJ.
