It’s Olympic Trials time again, the event most fans regard as the best and most exciting track meet other than the Olympics and World Championships. Eugene’s Hayward Field hosted the last three Trials, and they were all great, but this time it will be in the new, state-of-the-art stadium where those old cramped wooden bench-type seats will be replaced by individual comfortable seats, with legroom! And no posts to block the view.
This is the meet that determines the U.S. team for the Tokyo Olympics starting July 24th. Most of the team is determined by athletes finishing first, second, or third in their event at the Trials. So, the drama is palpable, the joy and disappointment intense in each event, and the performances superb.

Lodging: We have two accommodations, steps from one another. We have used these facilities for many past tours. They are walking distance to the stadium (20-30 minutes, through the University of Oregon campus), but there is a public bus, the EmX, for those who prefer to ride. It’s fine with us if you do not wish to use every night, but our contract with the hotels entail an 11-night stay, so there is no refund for nights not used.
The Meet Schedule: The meet timetable will not be announced for several months, but typically the Trials in Eugene have scheduled four days on, two days off, four days on. If that holds for these Trials,
then there will be competition on June 19, 20, 21, and 22. June 23 and 24 will be days of rest (with the T&FN gala party the evening of June 24). Then June 25, 26, 27, and 28 will conclude the competition.
For the two days of rest (if that’s the case), T&FN will offer optional trips to the coast or to local wineries. Group dune buggies on the coast are lots of fun!
The Tour Price and Deposit Requirement: Everything is more costly now—the hotel tax, the hotel room rates, and (we expect) the meet tickets. So we are projecting a tour price about $440 more than 2016–$2885 per person, double occupancy. $985, single supplement. The current deposit required is $750 per person.
Cancellation Fee: If you should have to cancel your tour, there is a $25 per person cancellation fee until December 31, 2019. After that the cancellation fee becomes $150 per person, plus any funds forwarded on your behalf which are not retrievable by T&FN.
To Join: By mail—send a check for $750 per person or credit card information to Track & Field News, 2570 W. El Camino Real, Suite 220, Mountain View, CA 94040. By phone—call 1-650-948-8188 and charge to your credit card—MasterCard, Visa, Amex.
