A big favorite in the season’s first charts, USC slipped to No. 2 for a month but is now back on top… barely. (MIKE SCOTT)
THE EBB & FLOW of the battle for the NCAA women’s team title this year has been fascinating. Chart 1 : USC by 30 over Oregon, with another 4 back to Arkansas. Chart 2 : USC by 32 over Arkansas & Oregon. Chart 3 : Arkansas by 1 over USC, then another 31 back to New Mexico. Chart 4 : Again Arkansas by 1 over USC. Both the Trojans and the Hogs lost a few points after the Regionals, with USC now holding a single-digit margin over Arkansas.
USC figures to have 10 scorers in 8 events, Arkansas 12 scorers in 9 events, suggesting that the Razorbacks have more margin for error, particularly since they’re projected to have only a single winner, while the Trojans are tabbed for no fewer than 5 (who obviously can’t score any higher). Once again, much drama would seem to be on the line in the meet’s final event, as they’re both projected to score (Arkansas 2, USC 5), with lots of room for gain/loss of crystal ball points.
The previous formchart held up very well at the Regionals, with few losses from the top 10s: 100 —none; 200 —none; 400 —2. Kaelin Roberts (USC); 800 —none; 1500 —4. Nicole Hutchinson (Villanova); Steeple —none; 5000 —6. Lauren Gregory (Arkansas); 10,000 —none; 100H —none; 400H —none; 4×1 —10. Texas A&M; 4×4 —none; HJ —6. Mady Fagan (Georgia); PV —none; LJ —1. Taishia Pryce (Kansas State), 9. Kala Penn (Florida); TJ —8. Alex Madlock (Baylor); SP —none; DT —9. Elena Bruckner (Texas); HT —3. Jillian Shippee (North Carolina); JT —10. Kelechi Nwanaga (UMBC); Hept —none.
There have been 5 new No. 1s since the last chart: Angie Annelus (USC) 200, Chanel Brissett (USC) 100H, USC 4×4, Olivia Gruver (Washington) PV, Yanis David (Florida) LJ,
