ON AUGUST 6, 2002, at the European Championships in Munich, Paula Radcliffe ran to what was then the No. 2 all-time women’s 10,000m clocking, splashing through puddles in pouring rain, head bobbing with effort. Nobody who was in the stadium will forget it. Many consider it to have been the premier performance to that date, given the questionable circumstances of the then-World Record.
