USATF Junior Women — Jackson Tears Off 200 PR

MULTIPLE HS RECORDSETTER Shawnti Jackson (South Granville, Creedmoor, North Carolina) came back from her 100 efforts in the Senior meet (she finished 5th in her semi) to race the U20 crowd over twice the distance.

She came away with her fastest half-lap yet, her 22.48 in zero wind slashing her best down from 22.70 and tying her for No. 5 all-time among preps. Maryland prep soph Elise Cooper (McDonogh, Owings Mills) ran 2nd in a PR 22.82, inches ahead of Texas A&M’s Camryn Dickson (22.85).

“It feels amazing. I didn’t see it coming,” said Jackson, who admitted she was “babying” herself after the start to protect a minor groin injury. “I’m going home with a big smile. I felt no pain, so I was just picking it up, picking it up throughout the race.”

In her absence, the 100 went to the other Jackson, Georgia frosh Kaila, the SEC runner-up. Her 11.15 proved to be dominant, handily beating Dickson (11.30).

USC frosh Christine Mallard delivered a stunning win in the 400, cutting her best from 51.41 to 50.74. That beat prep list leader Lauren Lewis (Prosper, Texas), who ran a low-altitude PR of 51.21.

New York prep Angelina Napoleon (Allegany-Limestone, Allegany), holder of the HSR in the 2000 steeple, gave the full distance a go for the first time and won it in 10:15.09, moving to No. 4 on the all-time HS list. “I was definitely going for under 10:00,” she admitted, “but this was just for the experience.”

The long jump went to Stanford’s Alyssa Jones at 22-¾ (6.72). She used that as a warm-up for the senior event the next night, where she placed 4th. “This is my last year as a 19-year-old,” she said, “so I wanted to get the U20 experience while I still could, since I had never done that.”

In the heptathlon, 16-year-old JaiCieonna Gero-Holt (Emerald Ridge, Puyallup, Washington) scored 5552 points for a new national soph-class/age-16 record and No. 4 all-time.

A good chunk of those points came from the high jump, where she cleared a nation-leading 6-1½ (1.87). She later came back to win the open high jump at 5-10¾ (1.80).
