Jones Memorial Men — WL 100 For Scary Terry

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, April 14–15 — A Texas Tech SID quipped before events began that “Scary Terry” would be the man to watch at the Tom Jones Memorial. Quite a prediction with world champion Grant Holloway scheduled to open his 110H season and 200 global titlist Noah Lyles making his yearly debut in the 100.

Nonetheless, Scary Terry — better known as Terrence Jones, the Tech junior from the Bahamas — outshone Lyles in the century after a flashy relay carry and gave rise to the suggestion his moniker deserves copyright.

Jones, the NCAA indoor 60 champ, anchored the Red Raiders to a 0.66 win over Texas in section 2 of the 4×1, 38.60–39.26. Three hours later in the 100, Scary Terry got the best start and poured it on to a world-leading and PR 9.91 win. The first 4 all PRed: Jones’ Tech teammate Courtney Lindsey (10.04), Florida’s PJ Austin (10.09) and Iowa’s Austin Kresley (10.10).

Lyles certainly got the message as Jones’s dash preceded his pro showdown with Andre De Grasse and Joe Fahnbulleh. Julian Forte false-started on the first go around, then caused a somewhat longer than reset interval as he rejoined the final running under protest.

China’s Zhenye Xie got out fastest before Kendall Williams and Forte caught him between 40 and 50m. Lyles then started to gain ground and pass them as Fahnbulleh, a bit behind at 50m but a known fast finisher like Lyles, matched his acceleration. Lyles broke first in 9.95 with Fahnbulleh nearly sneaking up on him in lane 3 for a 9.98, a new PR for the erstwhile Gator now a pro.

For Lyles, it was his best wind-legal opener since the pandemic outlier season of ’20. Olympic 200 winner De Grasse finished a well beaten 5th in 10.21. Lyles had also posted a 20.16 half lap on Friday to win by 0.59.

Holloway got things started on Saturday with a 13.03 heat win out of lane 8 to take the world lead. Jamaican Rasheed Broadbell was not far behind with 13.12.

In the final, a fully focused Holloway got out to a quick start as Broadbell hesitated, appearing to look for a false start call before abandoning the race before the first hurdle. Holloway continued error free as he produced a 13.05 with Robert Dunning 2nd in a PR 13.23.

Times of 13.03 and 13.05 in an April season opener? Stay tuned.

On Friday night, a buzz was in the air following Julien Alfred’s sizzling 21.91 in the women’s 200. Florida’s Robert Gregory got out quick and nearly pulled even with Tarsis Orogot, who was just outside him in lane 8, through the first turn. That seemed to be a wakeup call for Alabama soph Orogot who sprung into the final straightaway with a powerful burst that drew him clear of Gregory for the win in 19.60w (2.9) to 19.78w.

Both moved up big time on the all-conditions collegiate ATL, to positions Nos. 2 and 7. Louisville’s Cameron Miller also slipped under 20 (19.93w) for 3rd.

In the men’s 400H, Texas Tech’s Caleb Dean in lane 9 and Baylor’s Nathaniel Ezekiel in lane 7 matched each other stride for stride through the sixth hurdle. By the seventh, Alabama’s Chris Robinson, in lane 8, joined the duo over barrier No. 8.

Robinson appeared to be on his way to the win, but Dean eased past over the final two hurdles to win in 48.47, briefly the world leader and a 1.27 PR for the Texas Tech junior transfer from Maryland. Robinson improved his best by nearly a half-second to finish in 49.10 as WC bronze medalist Trevor Bassitt struggled and finished 3rd in 49.18.

Tennessee’s Emmanuel Bynum backed up his 4th-place NCAA Indoor finish with a strong 44.67 for the win. Bynum missed last year’s outdoor season and had a best of 45.98 coming into ’23.

The Jones-anchored Texas Tech 4×1 squad wasn’t even the fastest lap relay team in the meet. The Gainesville Elite team of Ronnie Baker, Erriyon Knighton, Holloway and Fahnbulleh cranked out a 38.28. Close behind Florida’s quartet of Ryan Willie, Jacory Patterson, PJ Austin and Robert Gregory sped to 2nd in 38.54.
