Pre-Nats XC — Powerful BYU Women & Arkansas Men

EARLYSVILLE, VIRGINIA, October 14 — With 5 runners in the top 10, the No. 6 BYU women stomped on the field at Pre-Nationals, held at Virginia’s Panorama Farms. That 32-point tally gave the Cougars a very safe lead over surprising No. 19 Arkansas, whose 90 points came in ahead of the 104 from host Virginia, No. 7 in the coaches poll. Oregon, ranked No. 17 coming in, finished 4th with 117, as no other nationally ranked teams competed.

Carmen Alder led the way for BYU, the junior taking command before 3K, putting together a 6-second lead over Oregon’s Maddy Elmore with a kilometer to go, and then stretching that margin for a 19:36.2–19:47.0 win over 6K. Arkansas got a key low stick from frosh Paitlyn Noe, 3rd just a few strides behind Elmore in 19:49.6. Virginia’s Margaret Appleton finished 4th in 19:55.6, and Jenna Hutchins ran 5th in 19:55.6.

For Alder, it was her first collegiate win. Said coach Diljeet Taylor, “I’m super proud of our women and their work. I think there are a few more gains that we can make, but they have done a really good job these few weeks.”

The Razorback men pulled off an upset after coach Chris Bucknam said the goal was to “get an idea of how really good this team is.” Scoring just 35 with 4 in the top 6, the No. 21-ranked squad topped Tennessee (No. 17) and Virginia (No. 10). The Vols tallied 89 to Virginia’s 112, with unranked Montana State 4th at 137.

Arkansas dominated the very tight lead pack that still had 6 contenders at 6K, with soph Ben Shearer running at the back of that group. At 7K, Shearer had moved up to 3rd, but he and Patrick Kiprop trailed their teammate Kirami Yego by more than 2 seconds, with Tennessee’s Yaseen Abdalla also still in the mix.

To say Shearer kicked best is an understatement. He pulled away convincingly on the final uphill sprint to win in 22:55.0 on the 8K course, well ahead of Abdalla (22:58.6), Yego (23:04.2) and fast-finishing Chandler Gibbons of Kansas (23:09.6). Kiprop faded to 5th in 23:11.5.
