Nike Nationals Boys — International Preps Get Their Moments

EUGENE, OREGON, June 18–22 — After watching his Texas Titans teammate sweep the USATF U20 finals over 100 and 200 at Hayward the previous two days, sprint sensation Jake Odey-Jordan (Clemens, Schertz, Texas) finally had a chance to compete Saturday in the Nike Outdoor Nationals 100. He made the most of it.

In lane 4, with the U20 doubler Tate Taylor (Harlan, San Antonio) next to him in 5, British 18-year-old Odey-Jordan got a slight edge with his start and built it quickly by mid-race, with his training partner unable to reel him in. Odey-Jordan’s tremendous execution rewarded him with a solid 0.09 margin and a PR 10.01, good for =No. 5 all-time.

“My start wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, but my transition was really good,” the champ said. He clearly enjoyed getting the better of Tate this time, but a “we know what happens at practice” quip indicated he was confident that if he performed, the results would take care of themselves.

Even with bigger things at stake in the upcoming World U20s, Odey-Jordan still said winning the Nike 100 “means everything to me… Indoors, I won the 200, so I wanted to show them I can go down to the 100 as well.”

Another international prep, triple jumper Yevhen Zhmailo (Lake Washington, Kirkland, Washington), who shares his parents’ Ukraine citizenship, also waited for his moment in the sun. After breaking the indoor HS record in January at 52-9½ — he was beaten and had his HSR taken by Miles Nesmith at Nike Indoor. This time he got his national title.

Already tabbed to return to Eugene with Team Ukraine at World U20s, Zhmailo suffered five fouls in his series, noting he’s been dealing with heel injuries and is just getting back to a longer approach. But on his second leap he got a 51-¼ that gave him the win by more than a foot. “I would say I’m 85–90%,” he said. “Because my runup is not consistent, it makes my jumps kind of off… [but] it will mean a lot to represent my country here in the USA.”

While new prep hurdles record-setters Zacchaeus Brocks (110H) and Keenen Davis (400H) both passed on doubling back from U20s, spectacular talent abounded. Joshua-Kai Smith (Gar-Field, Woodbridge, Virginia), who ran 13.06 for 4th two days earlier, blazed a 13.08 into a faint (0.2) wind — a time that would have equaled Wayne Davis’s HSR just three days earlier. He established a lead by the fourth hurdle and pulled away from Andrew Jones (Collins, Spring, Texas) at 13.19.

Utah standout Josh Hamblin (Weber, Pleasant View), who had strong prelims but slower finals and missed both podiums in the U20s, came back and won the 400H with a PR 50.28.

In the distances, Nike Indoor mile runner-up Abdinasir Hassan (Northfield, Denver) capped off his stunning soph season with a 4:01.88, not quite beating his 10th-grade class record of 4:00.90 from the HOKA race two weeks earlier, but still remarkable. With erratic pacing in front of him, Hassan was far back in the early going and had a rough stumble, tweaking an ankle about 700m in.

Nonetheless, he finally reached the leaders at the bell, then burst away with 200 to go, finishing in 57.27. “I rolled my ankle real hard,” he said. “I was trying to go sub-4 for a very long time, and I think today was the day, but… [coming out of the tunnel] I felt the wind and I thought, ‘Let’s just try to win this race.’” Hassan’s kick was even more ferocious in the DMR three days earlier as he closed in 56.27 and overcame a nearly 5½-second deficit to give his squad the win.

Dylan Rowell (Anacortes, Washington), who had dipped under 4:00 to win the Brooks mile two weeks prior, was only 4th in Sunday’s mile, but the night before captured the deuce in a big PR 8:44.65. In the 5K, Ethan Locke (Valor, Waco) — who ran a “where did that come from” 29:09.38 for 10K against open & collegiate runners in March — backed it up with a nice 14:09.44 triumph.

The throws were outstanding across the board, with two new HSLs and two more that were very close. Discus thrower Simon Rosselli (Mead, Spokane) — unbeaten and the overwhelming national leader all season — finally nipped his PR from Arcadia with 225-8, strengthening his hold on No. 5 all-time. Nike weight champ Kayden Hulet (Smith, Reno), who eschewed the hammer to work on his other throws all spring, debuted with the ball and chain and swept U20s and NON — dominating in this second comp with 252-3 to reach No. 6 all-time.
