NEW YORK, NEW YORK, March 13–16 — NXN cross country champ Jane Hedengren (Timpview, Provo, Utah) continued her remarkable senior campaign with mind-boggling High School Records in the mile and 5000 at the Nike Indoor Nationals.
On the opening day at the Armory, the BYU-bound Hedengren clocked 15:13.36 to destroy both the indoor (15:28.90) and absolute (15:25.27) 5000 records set last year by Beth Leachman. The time also eclipsed the U.S. U20 best of 15:20.57 set indoors by Wisconsin’s Sarah Disanza in ’14.
And Hedengren had to work for it. Rylee Blade (Santiago, Corona, California), the Nike Outdoor champ last spring, shadowed her for much of the race and took the lead with 4 laps to go before Hedengren broke away on the penultimate circuit. Blades (15:16.72) was rewarded with No. 2 on the all-time lists.
Three days later Hedengren ran solo from the start and hit yard splits of 66.4, 66.5 (2:10.9), 67.6 (3:18.5) and 67.6 to finish in 4:26.14 and take down the 4:27.97 run by Sadie Engelhardt on the same track at the Millrose Games in February. That’s also an absolute HSR, improving on the converted value of Addy Wiley’s 4:26.16 for 1600 meters in ’22. Hedengren came through 1500 in 4:07.68, also an HSR (and No. 4 on the absolute all-time list).
“I just wanted to keep it hard the whole time, wanted to keep my foot on the gas for a really hard effort,” she said after the mile win. “I wanted to get the 5K record, but the mile was a surprise.”
Dana Wilson (Day, Greensboro, North Carolina) matched her PR (No. 2 all-time) to win the 60 in 7.16, then scorched the 200 in 22.81 to move to No. 3 on the all-time list.
Brooke Lloyd (Summer Creek, Houston, Texas) clocked 52.96 to win the 400 and Madeline Cooper (Drew, Atlanta, Georgia) took the 60H in 8.15 (and also placed 6th in the flat 60). Ava Kitchings (Greater Atlanta, Norcross, Georgia) took the long jump at 20-10¾ (6.37) while Hannah Grace (Coastal, Wilmington, North Carolina), ’24’s No. 1 All-America in the pole vault, scaled 14-3½ (4.36) to win.
