Mountain: BYU & Conner Mantz (BYU)

Provo, Utah — Defending national champ Conner Mantz and the 4th-placer last time, Nico Young, whose Northern Arizona team won in March, went at it hammer and tongs in the tough Mountain division.

They had close company much of the way but BYU junior Mantz once again was not to be denied. He prevailed over prodigy Young 29:39.6–29:40.8 as BYU teammate Casey Clinger nailed down 3rd.

“When I saw Nico Young take the lead, I thought, ‘With 100 to go, it’s not going to wear me out too much if I have a hard surge,’” said Mantz.

Both teams put 4 in the top 14, but it was coach Ed Eyestone’s Cougar squad, which came in rated No. 8 nationally, that took the win from the poll-rated No. 1 Lumberjacks, 42–57. Colorado placed 3rd with 83.

West: Stanford & Kieran Lumb (Washington)

Sacramento, California — A Canadian who ran at the NAIA for UBC through ’19 and placed just 10th at the Pac-12 Champs, Washington senior Kieran Lumb moved from 27th at halfway in the large lead group up to 7th in the next half mile, 2nd around 8K and kicked to the win (29:28.5) from Stanford’s Charles Hicks (29:29.5) and NCAA 5000 titlist Cooper Teare (29:29.7).

Lumb’s heroics, however, could not pull the Huskies past No. 5-rated Stanford as the Cardinal controlled the team race from the middle of the fouurth mile and prevailed 61–66. Portland in 3rd (94), defied the coaches poll. Rated No. 30 nationally before the meet, the Pilots overcame three squads ranked in the top 20 including Oregon (5th with 100 points).

Stanford’s win, its first with coach J.J. Clark and distance assistant Ricardo Santos at the helm, was also the Cardinal’s first since 2016.

Northeast: Syracuse & Ehab El-Sandali (Iona)

Boston, Massachusetts — It was a crowded pack race for the men at the Northeast Regional, with 12 together at 5K (15:22). By 8K (24:20), the crowd had dwindled only slightly to 9. Up front were Syracuse’s Aidan Tooker and JP Trojan, as well as Iona senior Ehab El-Sandali. On the final loop, things got real as Harvard frosh Graham Blanks challenged El-Sandali; the two hammered on each other and pulled away from the field.

At the finish, it was Canadian El-Sandali who crossed first, his 30:02.1 just a stride ahead of Blanks’s 30:04.0. Tooker managed 3rd in 30:14.9, and Harvard scored the next two, Matthew Pereira (30:18.6) and Acer Iverson (30:19.0).

Favored Syracuse took the team crown with 51 points for a seventh win in the last 8 tries, its depth defeating Harvard (68) despite the Crimson placing 3 in the top 5. Iona topped Providence for 3rd, 77–98.

Mid-Atlantic: Princeton & Parker Stokes (Georgetown)

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania — With 2K left in the Mid-Atlantic race, at least 10 men stood a chance of winning. That was the size of the lead pack that hit the 8K mark in 24:34.5, the pace being forged by Villanova’s Charlie O’Donovan and Haftu Strintzos.

However, at the end of the day the best cards were held by West Virginia soph Parker Stokes. Only 6th at the Big East, the All America steeplechaser had speed to burn on the final run-in, topping Strintzos with a 30:10.5 effort.

The Villanovan crossed 2nd in 30:13.1, ahead of Penn’s Noah Carey (30:17.8), Georgetown’s Jack Salisbury (30:20.5) and Princeton’s Jakob Kintzele (30:20.9).

National No. 18 Princeton came through as promised, with a nicely-packed 5-6-8-10-11 yielding a winning 40 points. Georgetown (49) and Villanova (57) followed closely.

“We’ve been building all year towards this race,” said Tiger coach Jason Vigilante. “We’ve been through so much as a group, after missing the 2020 season we’re so appreciative of these opportunities and our mindset as a group is to make the most of every chance we have to race together.”

South: Mississippi & Adriaan Wildschutt (Florida State)

Huntsville, Alabama — Mississippi had moved into the favorite position in the USTFCCCA poll after finishing 2nd to Arkansas at the SEC. The Rebels showed that was a good call here, keeping their top 5 within a 29-second spread to earn an 11-point win over Alabama, 68–79. Their third-straight win came thanks to pack running, with the lead 4 crossing the line within 0.4 of each other in places 11–14. Florida State, boosted by a 1–2 from Adriaan Wildschutt and Ahmed Muhumed, finished 3rd with 112.

Wildschutt, the NCAA runner-up last spring and the ACC champ 2 weeks ago, went to the front early and, once he broke away after 2M, didn’t look back. He grabbed the win in 29:07.2. Teammate Muhumed, a senior from Somalia, emerged from a tangle with Alabama’s three top Kenyans to snag 2nd in 29:20.5.

The Alabama trio followed: Victor Kiprop (29:21.8), Eliud Kipsang (29:28.1) & Hillary Cheruiyot (29:29.4).

Southeast: Wake Forest & Athanas Kioko (Campbell)

Louisville, Kentucky — After spending the first kilometer hanging back and gauging his competition, Campbell senior Athanas Kioko turned his morning run into a runway victory. The Big South champion, who ran 13:13.47 on the track last year to place 3rd in the NCAA 5000, burst to an 11-second lead by 3K, extended it to 20 seconds at halfway and held on for the win in 28:58.1.

Wake Forest junior Aaron Las Heras, only 18th at the ACC 2 weeks ago, finished fastest, grabbing 2nd in 29:17.9 ahead of Charleston Southern’s Fearghal Curtin (back from a stint at Arizona State) in 29:19.0 and Zach Facioni of Wake Forest (29:21.3).

John Hayes’s Wake Forest squad, figured for 2nd by the coaches, rallied to beat favored Furman 47–66, with North Carolina 3rd with 99 and NC State next at 138. It was the Deacons’ first regional title in more than two decades.

Great Lakes: Notre Dame & Simon Bedard (Butler)

Evansville, Indiana — National No. 6 Notre Dame showed up big at the Great Lakes regional on the Angel Mounds course, placing runners 4-5-7-10-11 (plus 12!) to score a mere 37, beating No. 9 Wisconsin by 50 points. Michigan landed 3rd just ahead of Michigan State, 106–110.

Individually it was Butler that impressed, the Bulldogs putting the first two across the line in Simon Bedard (29:50.0) and Barry Keane (29:51.5). The two, French and Irish, had led by 21 seconds at halfway (14:45.7). Keane led from that point until the final stretch, when Bedard outsprinted him.

Michigan State’s Morgan Beadlescomb made up a lot of ground with his 3rd in 29:53.2. Then came the low sticks for the Irish: Matthew Carmody (4th in 30:00.5) and 1500 Olympian Yared Nuguse (5th in 30:00.6). Midwest: Oklahoma State & Wesley Kiptoo (Iowa State)

Iowa City, Iowa — Uncharacteristically, Wesley Kiptoo waited till 3K to take over the Midwest race, leading the pack on the windy hills on a less-than scintillating clip (15:19 at 5K). On the next mile, he lost patience with that tempo and took off. By 6.5K he sported a 10-second lead. Approaching the finish, the Big 12 champion eased up, but still had plenty of room to hold off his fast-closing pursuers in 30:17.9, bettering a 16-year-old course record.

Illinois’ Jonathan Davis finished 2nd in 30:21.7, ahead of Scott Beattie of Tulsa (30:23.2), Adam Fogg of Drake (30:24.5) and Ryan Smeeton of Oklahoma State (30:24.9).

As expected, No. 3 Oklahoma State took its first title since ’16, with 4 in the top 10 plus a 15th adding up to 43 points. No. 4 Iowa State came next at 57, with No. 10 Tulsa close behind at 65.

South Central: Texas & Haftu Knight (Texas)

Waco, Texas — The last time the South Central Regional was held in Waco, Arkansas edged Texas by just 3 points to take the ’13 title, one of 16 the Razorbacks had captured since ’00.

This time around the Longhorns, only ranked No. 14 nationally, upended No. 7 Arkansas 35–39, putting 3 across the line before the first Razorback. Third place Arkansas State finished far back at 166 points. The Texas triumph came in the last part of the race; at 8K, the Razorbacks had held a 33-44 edge.

Individually, Longhorn soph Haftu Knight, who had only been 13th at the Big 12, finished best, coming from 7th-place with a kilo to go to beat Kwanele Mthembu of Texas State to the line, 30:10.4–30:11.1. Then came two Longhorn frosh, Rodger Rivera and Yaseen Abdalla in 30:17.9 and 30:18.6.

Amon Kemboi then led a Arkansas rush on the finish, placing 5th in 30:26.6, just ahead of teammates Emmanuel Cheboson (30:26.7) and Gilbert Boit (30:26.8).
