GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, April 18-19 — Olympic 100 champion Julien Alfred ran her first 200 of the season and quickly confirmed that she is ready for anything this year. Running from lane 6 with a 0.2 breeze, she had a lead by the top of the straight but she made it an overwhelming lead by the time she hit the line in a world-leading 21.88. Missing her PR by just 0.02, Alfred left Favour Ofili (22.34) and Tamari Davis (22.37) nearly a half-second back.
The St. Lucian star’s post-race commentary on Instagram was succinct: ”Everything you do along your journey contributes to where you are going 🐆 💛”
In the hurdles, Grace Stark turned the tables on another Olympic champion. After a world-leading 12.51 heat, the Olympic 5th-placer lined up next to Masai Russell for the final. Stark got out quickly and powered to the finish in 12.59. Russell played catch-up the entire way and finished in 12.65. “I’m kind of excited,” said Stark. “It’s a good start, but I just need to keep going.”
The 400H put three collegians under 54. Arkansas’s Rachel Glenn led much of the way, but Michigan’s Savannah Sutherland nearly caught her by hurdle 7. Glenn fought back to a clear lead on the last hurdle, but the Canadian drove better to the line for the win. The ‘23 NCAA champion finished in 53.46, just nipping Glenn’s 53.48, Glenn moving to No. 6 among collegians all-time. Third-placer Akala Garrett of Texas also made the list, slashing 0.71 off her best, her 53.73 making her No. 10 ever.
Anavia Battle won the invitational 100 in a world-leading 10.98, the first time the ’21 Olympian at 200 has broken 11.00. McKenzie Long ran 11.02 for 2nd.
The collegiate 400 went to Georgia’s Aaliyah Butler, who moved to No. 6 all-time among collegians with her PR 49.44. That handily beat Auburn’s Vimbayi Maisvorewa (50.25) and Bulldog teammate Dejanea Oakley (50.35).
