Götzis, Austria, May 26-27—Familiar faces were on display at the annual biggest stop on the multis calendar, the Hypo Meeting, as Damian Warner won the decathlon for the fourth time and Nafi Thiam successfully defended her heptathlon crown, each with a world-leading score.
Thiam, a 23-year-old Belgian, put up the third highest total of her career, 6806, holding off the late charge of Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodríguez (6742 NR), but her real eye-opener was her first-day clearance of 6-7 (2.01) in the high jump. That’s the highest-ever in multi-event competition, surpassing the 6-6 (1.98) that has happened thrice before, twice by Thiam.
“It was a perfect first day despite the hot weather,” said Thiam, who had hurdled 13.45, jumped the 6-7, put a PR 50-2 (15.29) and half-lapped 24.61 to total a PR 4112 (compared to her 4056 in last year’s PR 7013 total).
Her pace dropped off on the second day, as she followed a PR 21-8¾ (6.62) jump by throwing the javelin 154-10 (47.20) and 2-lapping 2:18.62. Last year she had finished with PRs of 194-7 (59.32) and 2:15.24.
“It was a great weekend. I set a lot of PRs and I did not expect to score many of them,” she said. “In the javelin there was a lot of wind and I changed my runup.”
Behind her and Rodríguez, Mississippi State alum Erica Bougard moved to No. 4 on the all-time U.S. list with her list-leading 6725.
As for Warner, the 28-year-old Canadian managed the rare task of putting up a national-record total (8795) without notching a single PR. He nonetheless moved to No. 10 on the all-time world list.
“It means a lot to win this meeting for the fourth time,” said a delighted Warner. “I was solid across the board, especially in the long jump, the discus and in the hurdles. We were very lucky with the weather. I will now go back home to assess the rest of the season.”
