USC Emerges From Top-End Scramble
Caryl Smith Gilbert’s Trojans lead the chart.
Talk about rearranging the deck chairs! The projected order of the women’s team finishers at the NCAA Championships underwent quite a shakeup in the first two weekends of April.
The teams that were 1-2-3-4-5 on Chart #1 are now at 3-1-=4-2-=4.
USC’s theoretical score didn’t change, but Caryl Smith Gilbert’s Trojans nonetheless moved up a spot and how hold down the No. 1 spot over Georgia, which added 5 to its total. Dropping a dozen points, former leader Arkansas is now at No. 3.
If the meet goes as predicted (and you know likely that is!), when we get to the climactic 4×4 the standings will be these: 1. Georgia 54; 2. Arkansas 51; 3. USC 48.
But neither the Bulldogs nor the Razorbacks are projected to have a team in that race, so their scores won’t change. The predicted USC win would put the Trojans into the top spot, as would a 2nd, while a 3rd would leave them tied for the title.
USC is plotted to score 10 times in 8 events (100–2, 200, 400, 100H–2, 400H, 4×1, 4×4, SP).
Even if the 4×4 isn’t needed to decide the team title, it’s still likely to finish the meet on the highest of notes, where we should see Kendall Ellis of USC and Sydney McLaughlin of Kentucky on the anchors. Low-49 splits anyone?
There are two leader changes over Chart #1: Tatiana Gusin (Georgia) replaces Nicole Greene (North Carolina) in the HJ; Lexi Jacobus (Arkansas) takes over from Olivia Gruver (Kentucky) in the vault.
