LAWRENCE, KANSAS, May 15–17 — A month ago, Houston’s Jamar Marshall hurdled a 13.13 with a big 5.2 wind behind him. A sign of things to come? The senior came to the Big 12 Championships with a legal PR of 13.39. He improved that to 13.37 into a headwind in the heats. In the final, with the race flipped to take advantage of the wind, he churned out another 13.13, this one with a legal 0.3 wind.
Marshall didn’t get the best start, but by the first barrier was already fighting for the lead with Baylor’s Demario Prince. The two ran nearly even for the next 9 hurdles, with Marshall stretching his advantage in the run to the line. His 13.13 ties him for No. 5 among collegians all-time, while Prince clocked 13.18 to tie for No. 10.
The longer hurdles also thrilled the fans, as Baylor’s Nathaniel Ezekiel first moved to No. 7 among collegians with a stunning 47.90 heat. In the finals, he improved that to a 47.89; both were Nigerian records. Far behind finished Texas Tech’s Oskar Edlund at 49.00. At the end of the day, Ezekiel anchored the Baylor relay with a 44.12, good for 6th overall.
BYU’s James Corrigan pulled off the only double victory on the men’s side. On Friday the Olympian successfully defended his steeple crown with a comfortable meet record 8:22.20 win over Iowa State’s Joash Ruto (8:25.42). The next day he lined up at 5000 against Texas Tech’s Ernest Cheruiyot, who had won Thursday’s 10,000 in a pedestrian 29:37.64. In a crowded 38-man race, Corrigan joined the leaders only in the final laps, and at the bell let loose a 55.51 closer that gave him the win in a meet record 13:25.46. Cheruiyot got a PR 13:27.89 in 2nd, and Oklahoma State’s Denis Kipngetich ran 3rd in 13:30.95.
Said Corrigan, “Championship racing can be little frightening when guys in my events are running fast times and I haven’t run the times, but I know I have been training hard. To go out and put together performances when it matters most and show my strength was really encouraging.”
TCU’s Lloyd Frilot took the 800 in 1:45.79, with Oklahoma State’s Fouad Messaoudi winning the 1500 in 3:37.27. Arizona State, a newbie to the conference, won the 4 x 400 in 3:02.87, with Jayden Davis anchoring in 44.59.
Last year’s team winner, Texas, has flown to the SEC. That left ’24 runner-up Texas Tech’s Red Raiders to regain the title they had won in ’23 by stacking up 136 points with only four event wins: DeSean Boyce’s 400 (45.42), Cheruiyot’s 10K, the 4×1 (39.34) and Bradford Jennings in the high jump (7-3¼/2.22). BYU finished 2nd with 100.66 and Houston 3rd at 96.
