Winston-Salem, North Carolina, February 14 — As organizers had hoped, the final race at the Asics Sound Invite was the one the fans went home talking about. And Cole Hocker made sure it would be one they would be talking about for a long time. The 1500m Olympic champion pounded the mile field to deliver a stunning American Record 3:45.94, with a 1500 best of 3:30.80 along the way.
Hocker tucked in behind the rabbits at the start and was pulled through ideal splits of 56.77 (409m) and 57.47. Two laps later, he ran alone, hitting his third 400 in 56.88. With every lap he gained momentum, saying later that the crowd noise drove him on. “It felt like every lap was the last lap. I honestly had to rein it in a little bit because my adrenaline was so high.”
He zipped past 1500 in 3:30.80, taking 0.94 off Yared Nuguse’s mark. At the finish, his 3:45.94 cut 0.69 from the 3:46.63 that Nuguse ran at Millrose last year. “I think everyone was aware that I could finish a race really well in a championship but I’m kind of lacking those flat-out times in some events. The mile today was one of those, I just had to hammer it… It was absolutely unreal.”
Training partner Cooper Teare finished 2nd in 3:50.49, ahead of Vincent Ciattei’s 3:51.70. New Zealand teen Sam Ruthe got nailed by a few sharp elbows as he struggled to find a spot near the front in the early going. By the end he was thrashed, fading from 3rd to 7th in the final lap with his 3:52.46.
A teenager made the other big highlight of the night. Cooper Lutkenhaus, in his second pro 800, clocked a stunning 1:44.03 in a largely solo 4-lapper. The 17-year-old hit 24.89 and 50.56 behind the pacer before passing 600 in 1:17.56 and finishing in a World Junior Record, topping Russian Yuriy Borzakovskiy’s mark from 2000. He is now the No. 2 American of all-time. Behind him, Penn State’s Handal Roban ran 1:44.73, just shy of Colin Sahlman’s new 1:44.70 CR.
In the 3000, Nuguse and Ethan Strand staged a terrific battle only to be upended at the end by Nico Young, whose 54.59 final 400 brought him from 5th to the win in a PR 7:33.32. Nuguse ran 7:33.78 and Strand 7:35.29. Steepler Matthew Wilkinson PRed at 7:35.77.
Andrew Hunter outlasted Abdihamid Nur in the 5000, 13:10.87–13:11.59. It was comebacking Nur’s fastest time in two years.

On the women’s side, Sage Hurta-Klecker finished strongly to take the 800 in a PR 1:58.78 from Olivia Baker’s 1:59.18.
Nikki Hiltz led the last four laps of the 3000 to win in 8:34.98 from Sinclaire Johnson (8:35.48) and Susan Ejore (8:37.84). Annie Rodenfels took the 5000 in 15:13.72.
Emily Mackay closed the night for the women with her PR mile win over Sadie Engelhardt. Mackay covered her last 400 in 61.04 for a 4:22.43. Engelhardt (4:23.84) kicked past Maggi Congdon (4:24.48) in setting a PR. “I was hoping to break 4:20 but I can’t be mad with a win,” said Mackay.
