ARCADIA, CALIFORNIA, April 11–12 — Lost amid the heraldry of the sub-4 participants in the boys 3200 at the Arcadia Invitational, the girls 2M also promised something special. This school year, Jane Hedengren’s list of achievements had continued to spiral upwards. In a span of 10 months, the Timpview, Utah, senior scratched off a win over 2M at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, then captured the Nike Cross title in Portland in course record fashion.
Her ’25 campaign began with the No. 2 all-time 3200 indoor performance at the Simplot Games. In March, Hedengren set the U.S. U20 indoor 5000 record, along with the HS mile record at the Nike Indoor Nationals.
It was now time to tackle the deuce at this venerable SoCal gathering where stunning performances unfold under the lights. She wasted little time taking control. From the gun Hedengren ran solo, clipping off 71-second quarter-mile loops to pass the mile in 4:44.8.
With the field some 15 seconds in arrears, the BYU commit pressed on. After a trio of 72s, she hit the bell at 8:21.4, needing only a 77 to better Mary Cain’s 9:38.68 absolute 2M standard run indoors in ’13.
Hedengren crossed in 9:34.12, shattering the Cain record after covering her second mile in 4:49.4.
Although not as compelling, the race for 2nd was tight. Hanne Thomsen (Montgomery, Santa Rosa, California) edged Claire Stegall (Nolensville, Tennessee) by a tick, 10:01.72–10:01.82, with Keeghan Edwards of Mountain Vista (Colorado) taking 4th in 10:05.20 just ahead of the 10:05.58 by Sundara Weber (Sandwich, Illinois).
Hedengren said, “It was awesome. You don’t know when you’ll get another chance to do this when you’re feeling healthy and strong. Just trying to soak in this moments and make the most of them.”
Asked how the Arcadia faithful helped her get across the line, Hedengren acknowledged, “It was really special. When you come to these meets, usually as the race progresses in the last two laps, the crowd will get real loud. It was loud from the first 200m, so that was just incredible to have that support throughout.”
En route, Hedengren also produced the fastest prep times ever at 2000 (5:56.70) and 3000m (8:54.6). No official split was taken at the 3000 split, but we were able to generate a list-acceptable time by combining reliable hand-timing and frames from video.
Other notable performances: indoor 60 recordholder Lisa Raye (West Warwick, Rhode Island) swept the 100 (11.30) and 200 (23.30) and San Diego’s Anisa Bowen-Fontenot fended off Jasmine Robinson (North Cobb, Georgia) in a list leading 13.16–13.22 in the 100H.
Robinson avenged her short hurdles loss to Bowen-Fontenot with a convincing victory in the 300H. Robinson’s 39.81 is second only to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s 38.90, with Carlsbad High’s Morgan Herbst taking 2nd in 40.26, a second ahead of Bowen-Fontenot (41.26).
